News from the world of applications

March of War coming to iOS in June (20/4)

ISOTX has announced that their new game March of War has entered closed beta testing and is coming to iOS devices in the second quarter of this year. In the game, you take on the role of one of the countries and use your army full of different units and weapons to rewrite history. The March of War trailer looks good, so we can only hope that the game lives up to its potential and we get to play another great game on iOS.

Google blew Apple's Wavii service (April 23)

Apple and Google were fighting over the purchase of the Wavii service, which developed its own technologies for aggregating information and algorithms for summarizing it. Apple wanted to use the technology to expand Siri's capabilities. However, Google eventually beat the Californian company's offer with a final amount of $30 million. Although Apple currently has over 137 billion at its disposal, it probably did not see such potential in Wavia for the given amount. The company's employees will thus move to Google, where they will work on the Knowledge Graph service.

Mailbox developers are working on a version for iPad and Mac (April 25)

Mailbox has become a hit on the iPhone. Either because of its incredible waiting times, but also mainly because of its approach to managing e-mail boxes. For now, Mailbox is only available for iPhone, however, the developers have already started telling users on Twitter that an iPad version is being worked on and a Mac version is also planned. However, no further information was provided, so we can only wait for Mailbox to appear on other devices.

Instapaper was sold to Betaworks (25/4)

The well-known app for saving articles to read later, Instapaper, has a new owner. Marco Arment, the main and only developer of the project, decided to sell his app and related services to Betaworks, which, among other things, co-owns the website Digg and provides seed investments to startups. Arment decided to take this step mainly because of the large time burden. He preferred to hand over the project to someone who would continue to develop it for the operation, which he was no longer able to manage, and instead of employing other workers.

I am happy to announce that I have sold a majority stake in Instapaper to Betaworks. We drafted the agreement in such a way that a healthy and long-term operation was the main priority with the motivation to secure the future of Instapaper. I will continue to contribute my ideas to the project, while Betaworks will take care of operations, other staff and further development.

New applications

Draw Something 2 - we draw with friends for the second time

OMGPOP released a sequel to their hit game Draw Something. The original part, which quickly gained tens of millions of users in a short time, was bought by Zynga for 180 million, together with the development team, but soon after that the number of users began to decline rapidly. With the second installment, Zynga hopes to repeat the success of the first installment at its peak. Among the novelties is a significantly larger number of words (up to 5000 more), new drawing tools, a free drawing mode and, of course, a new design. You can find the game in the App Store either as a premium version for €0,89 or for free with ads.

Focus Twist - Lytro for a few dollars

Launched last year, the Lytro camera brought about a minor revolution in photography. It allows you to change the focus on different objects already in the finished photo. While the Lytro will cost $400, the Focus Twist application will offer a similar function for €1,79, while its solution is purely software using the iPhone's camera sensor. The application takes several photos with different focus within a few seconds, and the algorithm then combines them into one photo, on which you can then change the focus by tapping your finger on the objects. However, it has several limitations. For a perfect result, you need to completely eliminate movement, otherwise the photos with different sharpness will be slightly different, thus disappearing the illusion of a single photo. Because of the iPhone's small sensor, you also need to shoot the closest subject very close to get depth in the photos. Although the app isn't perfect, it does a great job of mimicking the Lytra concept in a very decent quality, and at a fraction of the price.

Important update

Twitter for Mac - update after a year of silence

An almost unbelievable thing happened to the Twitter app for Mac. The official client of the popular social network received an update after less than a year. The new version brings support for the Retina display, a new button for sharing photos and support for 14 languages. It's not too much and Twitter for Mac still has a lot of catching up to do, however Ben Sandofsky has said on Twitter that he is suspending work on the iOS version and moving to a Mac app, so we can look forward to more news in the future. But no one knows what they will be like. Twitter for Mac is available free.

Tweetbot with a new media timeline

Tapbots constantly confirm that in every update of their Twitter client they can offer something that takes the app a little further. In version 2.8, Tweetbot for iOS has one big new feature – the option to display only the so-called media timeline, in which you can only find tweets with images and videos. You can switch the timeline at the top next to the search field. The image viewer has also been redesigned. It's a small thing, but browsing is now more convenient. The image closes with the same gesture as in the Facebook application. The new Tweetbot also displays the number of retweets and stars in the tweet detail. Tweetbot for iPhone costs 2,69 EUR, za the same price you'll also get Tweetbot for iPad.

twitterific

The update of this client for Twitter finally brought the missing notifications and their relatively wide use. In addition to these, it also brought the integration of the Favstar service and the display of Trends on Twitter. You can find Twitterrific in the App Store for 2,69 €.

Yahoo has integrated Summly into its iOS app

Yahoo continues to transform under Marissa Mayer, and after the new Yahoo! Weather! and Yahoo! Mail also comes with a new version of Yahoo! for iOS, which includes, in addition to a redesigned article preview, the Summly service for summarizing content. This is a service that Yahoo! bought back months ago and which intelligent algorithm creates a short text extract from long articles.
