News from the world of applications

TomTom will now guide you for free on the first 75 kilometers of the journey (March 14)

Until now, TomTom has offered a range of paid applications designed for specific regions. Moreover, these applications were not exactly cheap. For example, a user paid €45 for navigation in the United States. Now, however, one of the biggest players on the navigation market is coming up with a significant change in pricing policy and making its offer much more transparent.

There is now only one app available for download TomTom Go, which will also navigate you for free on the first 75 kilometers of your journey. This mileage restriction is canceled every month. But the novelty will also please travelers on longer distances. In the application, you can now unlock a full navigation package for 20 euros per year, thanks to which you will be able to download maps for the whole world.

TomTom is now becoming a relatively capable competitor for its rivals. It offers high-quality map data and roughly the same functions as everyone else, i.e. offline navigation, overview of speed limits, traffic information or spatial rendering of buildings. Finally, all this at a reasonable price and in a reasonable form.

Adobe released a trial version of Experience Design CC, an application for creating user environments (14/3)

Adobe XD was first introduced last October under the name "Project Comet". Now in public testing, it's available to anyone with a free Adobe ID.

experience design is a tool for creators of websites, applications and other interactive environments. Its main asset should be the ability to quickly switch between creating and testing environments, replicating created elements, working efficiently with templates or composing individual layers of the environment and transitions between them. The results of the work can then be shared on desktop, mobile devices and via the web.

Adobe DX is currently available for OS X and Adobe encourages users to provide feedbacks.

Facebook Messenger has another game: basketball (18/3)

Since the beginning of February, you can play chess in the Facebook Messenger app and in the chat window on the web. Just send your opponent a message containing "@fbchess play". Now, another game, basketball, has appeared in Messenger on the occasion of March Madness, America's college basketball championship.

The game will start if you send the basketball emoticon ?  and then tap it in the message window. The goal, of course, is to shoot the ball through the hoop, which (if aimed correctly) is achieved by sliding it across the screen towards the basket. The game counts successful throws and rewards them with adequate emoticons (raised thumb, hands, clenched biceps, crying face, etc.). After ten successful throws, the basket starts moving from left to right.

You need to have it installed to run the game the latest version of Messenger, i.e. 62.0

New applications

The Czech application Showzee will allow you to effectively share audiovisual stories

Showzee belongs to social applications that focus on sharing complex audiovisual material. This is an alternative to globally successful applications such as Instagram, Snapchat or Vine, from the workshop of Czech developers.

Showzee allows users to share engaging combinations of images, video and text on their profile in individual "showzees". At the same time, it is of course possible to follow other users who you find interesting. From the aforementioned Instagram et al. Showzee is distinguished by a greater emphasis on effectively combining several types of content and by dividing users into interest groups. This makes it easier to discover interesting profiles to follow.

LastPass Authenticator simplifies two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication is useful, as it requires a one-time generated code in addition to the classic login name and password to log in. Its disadvantage may be that the code must be manually copied during the limited time during which it is active. The new LastPass Authenticator app aims to simplify this process to a simple tap.

If the user has two-step verification enabled on the given service (Authenticator is compatible with all Google Authenticator compatibles), he can use this application again and after entering his login data, he will receive a notification on his iOS device. This will take care of opening the application, in which you only need to click on the green "Allow" button, after which the login will take place. In addition to notifications that open the application, LastPass Authenticator also supports sending a six-digit code via SMS.

The application is currently only available in English, but it is completely free.

ProtonMail offers PGP encrypted email

ProtonMail from the Swiss CERN scientists workshop has been on the market since 2013 and focuses on encrypted electronic correspondence. When providing its services, it uses open-source cryptographic standards AES, RSA and OpenPGP, its own servers and complete disk encryption. ProtonMail's slogan is "Secure email from Switzerland".

ProtonMail now appears for the first time as an app for mobile devices. It uses PGP encryption, where the message is encrypted using a public key, but its decryption requires a second, private, key to which only the recipient of the email has access (this type of encryption was used, for example, by Edward Snowden when communicating with journalists).

The second most important capability of ProtonMail is the sending of self-destructing messages, where the sender can choose when it will be deleted from the recipient's mailbox.

ProtonMail is in the App Store available for free.

Important update

Scanner Pro 7 comes with OCR, it will convert scanned document into editable text

Pro Scanner is an application of the successful developer studio Readdle and is used to scan documents. On Thursday, its capabilities were significantly expanded again, when the application reached its seventh version.

The main innovation of the new version of Scanner is text recognition. This means that the application can convert the scanned text into an editable form. The app currently recognizes texts in English, German, Polish, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish, Swedish and Norwegian. Another important function is the so-called workflows, thanks to which it is possible to create predetermined chains of several activities that the application will perform automatically after scanning a document. These include naming the file according to the given key, saving it to the desired folder, uploading it to the cloud or sending it by email.

In addition to adding brand new abilities, existing ones have also been improved. Scanner Pro should be more intuitive thanks to a modified user interface, and scans should be better quality thanks to improved color processing and distortion correction.

Outlook will now allow you to protect your emails with Touch ID

Outlook brings with version 2.2.2 a very interesting novelty in the form of Touch ID integration. The user can now lock emails with his fingerprint. No other "big" email client offers similar security protection, so Outlook comes with an interesting competitive advantage.

Emerging from Acompli, which Microsoft simply bought and rebranded, Outlook is evolving at a really fast and constant pace. In addition to the "facelift", the application has gradually received support for new services, various control gestures and is also quickly taking over the functions of the popular Sunrise calendar, which Microsoft also took under its wing as part of the acquisition and now wants to fully integrate it into Outlook.

You can download Outlook, whose universal application works perfectly on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch free from the App Store.

Slack has learned 3D Touch and notification management

Useful news was also received by Slack, a popular tool for team communication and collaboration. On iPhone, Slack now supports 3D Touch, which will save a lot of time for users of the latest iPhones. Thanks to shortcuts from the application icon, it is now possible to quickly switch between teams, open channels and direct messages, and last but not least, also search between messages and files.

The 3D Touch function has also arrived in the application itself, naturally in the form of peek & pop. This allows previews of messages and channels to be called up from the bar, so you can check what's going on in a team conversation without marking it as read. You will also appreciate Peek & Pop for links that can also be previewed.

Search Assist has also been improved, and a significant innovation is better management of notifications. Now you can easily mute individual channels and set different notification parameters so that Slack informs you about what is happening only to the extent you wish. Naturally, the update also brings overall improvements and minor bug fixes.

Overcast is now more efficient and its patrons can use night mode

An already excellent podcast player with the name Overcast received further improvements. With version 2.5, the application added a night mode and the ability to play your own audio files recorded through the Overcast web interface, which, of course, will only be appreciated by so-called patrons, i.e. users who financially support the development of the application. Developer Marco Arment also came up with news that will please everyone. These include increasing the efficiency of the application, which now consumes much less energy and data. In addition, Voice Boost has also been improved and the ability to add and remove podcast episodes in bulk has been added.

Telegram significantly improves group chat

An advanced application for encrypted communication called Telegram comes with significant improvements for mass communication. The maximum number of participants in one mass chat (that is, one supergroup) has been increased to an incredible 5 people. In addition, it is now possible to generate a link to a conversation. Anyone who receives such a link can view the entire chat history. To join the conversation, however, the user must be an approved member of the conversation.

The chat moderator also has new options, which can now block or report users. The moderator can also pin individual posts to a prominent position, which is useful, for example, for conversation rules or other key posts.

For now, users in Europe and the United States can enjoy the group chat news. However, users in Asia will also soon see it.

Day One comes with IFTTT integration

Day One, the best digital diary on iOS, will delight all automation lovers with its news. The application now works with the popular tool IFTTT (if this than that), which allows you to set up a whole range of practical automated operations. So you can set sequences such as sending each of your Instagram photos to a selected diary, saving "varnished" tweets to another diary, forwarding notes by e-mail, etc.

Download Day One from the App Store in a universal version for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch for € 4,99.
