During yesterday evening, it became clear that the company Twitter is testing a completely new function within its official mobile application, which it wants to compete with other companies such as Facebook or Whatsapp. This is a so-called 'Secret Conversation', i.e. a form of direct communication that uses advanced methods of encrypting the communicated content.

Twitter is thus among other providers of communication services that have started to offer encryption of sent messages in recent years. It is mainly about the very popular WhatsApp or Telegram. Thanks to encryption, the content of the messages should be visible only to the sender and recipient in the conversation.

The news has been spotted in the latest version of the Twitter app for Android, along with a few settings options and information about what it actually is. It is not yet clear when this news will be extended to all platforms and for all user accounts. From the progress so far, it is clear that this is currently only limited testing. However, once Secret Conversation appears in public versions of the app, Twitter users will be able to communicate with each other without worrying about their conversations being tracked by third parties.

According to preliminary findings, it looks like Twitter will use the same encryption protocol (Signal Protocol) that competitors in the form of Facebook, Whatsapp or Google Allo use for their communication services.
