AirPods Pro received not only a redesigned design and plugs, but also several new functions. If we leave out the most touted ambient noise cancellation or throughput mode, there are other useful innovations that some AirPods Pro owners may not even know about. One of them is that the charging case of the headphones now responds to a tap gesture.

Like the 2nd generation AirPods introduced in the spring, the new AirPods Pro also support wireless charging. This means that you can place the case with the headphones inside (or without them) on any Qi wireless charger and you don't need to connect a Lightning cable. After placing the case on the mat, a diode lights up in front, which, depending on the color, indicates whether the headphones are charging or whether they are already charged.

However, the problem lies in the fact that the diode does not light up during the entire charging process, but turns off after 8 seconds of placing the case on the pad. With previous AirPods, it was necessary to either open the case to check the charging status or remove it from the pad and start charging again.

In the case of AirPods Pro, however, Apple focused on this shortcoming – all you have to do is tap the case at any time during charging and the diode will automatically light up. You can easily check whether the headphones are already charged or not - if the LED lights up green, the case and headphones are at least 80% charged.

The advantage is that the gesture works even when the case is charging separately and there are therefore no AirPods inside. However, it is not supported when charging with a Lightning cable, and the case needs to be opened to light up the LED. In addition, only the new AirPods Pro support the function, and the older 2nd generation AirPods unfortunately do not offer it, although they are also sold with a wireless charging case.
