Apple presented the iPhone 15 Pro Max as the clear leader of its portfolio. But it differs from the smaller model not only in the size of the body, display, battery and 5x zoom of its telephoto lens. Apple has finally taken another major step forward with it, which is also much simpler.

Apple has finally realized that a phone that encourages people to take real loads of photos, loads of 4K video and play heavy games also needs adequate internal storage. Exclusively only for the iPhone 15 Pro Max model, he cut the basic 128GB memory variant and offers it from 256GB of integrated space for all your data. There were also 512GB and 1TB variants. This is a really great move on Apple's part, it's just a shame they didn't see it through to the end.

Is the iPhone 15 Pro really a Pro?

With the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple of course also introduced the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 and 15 Plus. For the latter two, we wouldn't expect something like an increase in basic storage, at least not yet, but why the iPhone 256 Pro doesn't also have 15GB of basic storage is a moot question. Yes, it lacks a 5x telephoto lens, but it otherwise copies the capabilities of the larger model, so there's really no reasonable reason to beat it, even if it is.

You may not agree, but does the iPhone 15 Pro deserve the "Pro" designation when it deliberately skimps on its equipment? With the telephoto lens, we can believe that it would not fit into it "yet", which is not a question of memory, since the device is of course sold with it, as well as in the 512GB and 1TB version. But Apple is playing a philosophical game here. The 128GB iPhone 15 Pro starts at 29 CZK, which is significantly less than the 990 for the base iPhone 35 Pro Max. But if you go for the same memory variant, you will get to the amount of CZK 990. So it's a difference of only three thousand, for which you get a bigger display, a bigger battery and a bigger zoom.

It would not make sense for Apple to eliminate the 128GB version of the smaller model and start at a price of CZK 32. The price of CZK 990 is important because it is still below the magical threshold of 29. Of course, the company also applies the same logic to the domestic market. The main problem with Apple and its iPhones with regard to their storage is that they charge too much to increase it.

The competition is rather waiting

There are few manufacturers who try to push the integrated storage a little further. Samsung is primarily trying to change this, which already kept the 23GB version in the Galaxy S128 series only for the smallest of the trio of models, because the Galaxy S23+ and S23 Ultra already started with 256GB of storage at the beginning of the year, without their price increasing drastically year-on-year. Samsung also offers its top puzzle in the form of the Galaxy Z Fold5 with 256 GB in the base.

So it looked promising that others might catch on to this trend and start gradually raising the basic storage. But Google has now thrown a pitchfork into it, offering just that 8 GB as a base for the Pixel 8 and 128 Pro. We'll see how Apple does in a year. We do not expect that 256 GB will be introduced for the entire new generation, but the 16 Pro model really deserves this capacity. This could also finally trigger the expected avalanche across the entire mobile segment.
