During a conference call with shareholders in which Tim Cook et al. informed the public about how they fared economically during the last quarter, there was also very interesting information about the AirPods wireless headphones. Although Apple introduced them the year before last, it seems that there is still a huge interest in them. And to such an extent that even after two years, Apple is not able to immediately cover all the demand.

Wireless headphones AirPods were introduced by Apple at the September keynote in 2016. They went on sale just before Christmas of that year, and basically throughout the following year they were a very hot product, which was sometimes waited for several months. Last fall, the situation calmed down for a moment and AirPods were commonly available, but as Christmas approached, the waiting period grew again. Currently, the headphones are available roughly a week late (according to Apple's official website). Cook also reflected on the huge interest during the conference call.

AirPods are still a hugely popular product. We're seeing them in more and more places, whether it's gyms, coffee shops, anywhere people enjoy music with their Apple devices. As a product, they are a huge success and we are trying to meet the demand of interested parties as best as possible.

Unfortunately, Apple does not release sales numbers for AirPods. Headphones belong, together with HomePod and other products, to the 'Other' section. However, Apple earned an incredible 3,9 billion dollars in the last quarter, which represents a year-on-year increase of a respectable 38%. And given that the HomePod is not selling very well, it is easy to guess which product is contributing significantly to these numbers. The only more concrete information we have about sales is that AirPods broke their all-time sales record in the last quarter (the Apple Watch did the same, by the way). Various foreign analysts estimate that Apple sells around 26-28 million units of its AirPods per year. The future should also be cheerful in this respect, as we should expect a successor this year.
