Most Apple fans will surely agree that one of Apple's best inventions in the field of portable computers was definitely MagSafe. The magnetic connector was a perfect example of simplicity and practicality. Unfortunately, with the advent of USB-C and later Thunderbolt 3, MagSafe took over and its return is not expected in the near future. Fortunately, there are several ways to bring the iconic connector back to the new MacBooks in some form, with ThunderMag being the latest and, for now, the most successful representative.

The effort to return MagSafe to newer laptops from Apple has been there since the release of the first Retina MacBook in 2015. Griffin BreakSafe is undoubtedly among the most famous reductions of this type. The idea is certainly great, but it also has its limitations - through the reduction, it is not possible to charge the MacBook with the necessary power, and in some cases the data transfer speed is also limited. And it is precisely in this respect that the new ThunderMag is supposed to be ahead and eliminate the aforementioned ailments.

In the description of its Kickstarter campaign, Innerexile states that ThunderMag supports the full specifications of the Thunderbolt 3 port, making it the first of its kind in this area. The reduction supports charging with a power of up to 100 W, transmission speed of up to 40 Gb/s, image transmission in 4K/5K resolution, as well as audio transmission.

The accessory itself consists of two parts – one is permanently in the USB-C port of the MacBook and the other is on the cable (either the power cable or the data cable from the drive). Both of these parts connect to each other with a 24-pin reversible magnet and thus work in much the same way as MagSafe. In the event that someone interferes with the cable, the magnets will immediately disconnect and will not damage the MacBook. In addition, the reduction is resistant to dust and has protection against short circuit and overvoltage.

ThunderMag is part of a crowdfunding campaign at Kickstarter currently available for $44 (approximately 1 thousand crowns). But as soon as it goes on sale, its price will rise to 79 dollars (approx. 1 crowns). The first pieces should arrive to customers in April 800. There is considerable interest in the accessories, as nine times the target amount was already collected in three days.
