Anyone who has ever been interested in task lists, to-do applications or GTD tools for iOS and OS X must have come across one of the best-known names in this industry – Things. The developers at Cultured Code have now announced that we can look forward to a new version, Things 3, next year.
Some may be surprised by the term "next year", but let's drink some clear wine, Cultured Code probably cannot give themselves a more precise date. It is precisely because of the infamous delays with practically any update that many users have left Things, but the application is so successful and high-quality that it still has a very large user base.
This is also evidenced by the latest numbers - Cultured Code announced that their app has reached one million units sold. With the arrival of the new version, we can expect another thousands of applications sold, because Things 3 will bring the much-anticipated changes in the style of iOS 7, which until now the popular task management tool has not met.
We've been working on Things 3 for a little over a year now, which will be available for Mac, iPhone and iPad. They will feature a fresh new visual style, a redesigned user interface, more structure for your lists, and a range of new features designed to help you be more productive. We've overhauled many areas of the app that were neglected in the past, and we've also revamped most of the code. It's the most ambitious update we've ever done.
The 11-member Cultured Code team originally planned to show at least part of the new app to the public this year, but the apps are said to be not yet at a stage where that would be possible. This is also confirmed by the fact that no alpha or beta versions were available for testing in November, as the developers told us.
We can check the development status of new applications on the so-called board status, which, however, users tend not to like. For example, cloud synchronization on it is in phase It is being worked on it was shining for too long. So it's legitimate to worry that it won't take too long for Things 3 to be released, however, according to what Cultured Code promises on their blog, we can look forward to really significant changes years later.
Back in June, we were faced with a pretty clear decision regarding iOS 7. We were fully engaged in the development of Things 3 and could either continue development as planned or pause development, update the code of the old Things 2 and release a half-baked app with a new skin. Now it is clear how we decided. So you'll have to stick with the old Things 2 design a bit longer, but it also means that Things 3 will be released much sooner than they originally would have been.
Things 2 has been with us since August 2012, when it was released with the much-anticipated cloud sync. The very first version of Things appeared in the App Store back in 2009. Now we can also find this application in the Mac App Store, where it costs $50. You can get it for $20 for the iPad, $10 for the iPhone.
I'm really looking forward to it. I've been using the iPhone iPad and Mac version for years and it's simply the best and most importantly clear task manager. No unnecessary fluff. I'm curious if the update = update of the existing version or release of a new application
Have a nice day
Will I have to buy things 3 again if I buy things 2 now? Or will the update be free?
There was no mention of it then, and both variants can actually occur. We'll have to wait for Cultured Code to say more.
I sent this question directly to Cultured Code some three or four weeks ago and they gave me an evasive reply that they couldn't give me an answer to this yet either - my understanding was that I preferred not to buy things 2 for my new ipad. But that was at a time when it looked like the release of Things 3 during December, the latest reports rather indicate that we will have to wait some Friday for the triple, so buying the double might not be completely useless...
It would be enough for me if the two could cooperate with other users and also attach arbitrary attachments to tasks with online or offline selection in the cloud. And perhaps synchronization with iCal or Reminder. And ideally to be able to perform tasks via applescript. No more monkey bars are needed.
– Omnifocus is confusing and does not allow cooperation
– Wunderlist is nice, but too limited and simple
– Evernote has an ugly interface, functionally I don't like its UI and it has few settings regarding time todo.
So hopefully the trio will get along and it will be of some use and we won't have to wait a year for it...
Try 2do, I use it on OSX, iPad and Galaxy note II. Synchronization via Dropbox. Maximum satisfaction.
I can also recommend.
Thanks for the tip. I've tested, but unfortunately I haven't figured out how to cooperate projects with other people. Alternatively, delegate individual tasks to others. As a personal task book, planner it looks good, but as a tool for planning in a smaller group it is unfortunately useless.
