FineWoven is the new leather, ecological Apple announces to the world. But the owners complain a lot about the poor quality of the material. The company wanted to bring a new material, and somehow the ecological campaign did not succeed. Or maybe it's all different and what about eco leather?

It is shiny, soft and pleasant to the touch, and it should resemble suede. Apple uses FineWoven material to make covers for iPhones, MagSafe wallets and straps for Apple Watch, trying to reduce the impact of its actions on our entire mother earth, because it is a recycled material, because of which there may not be the number of cows from which it was used skin on his previous products. Fewer cows = less methane produced and less necessary feed for them.

Trying to be different at all costs

Someone took it with thanks, others hate it. This is due to the fact that Apple may have wanted to get too close to the skin, and certainly also to the fact that it charges relatively high amounts for this artificial material. Maybe everything would be different if he lowered the price by at least a third, or maybe he completely scrapped the design of the bike and just replaced the classic leather with eco leather. According to its name, it is already quite eco, isn't it?

Eco leather is not leather from ecologically raised animals on organic farms. It actually has nothing to do with skin, except that it has a similar structure resembling skin. It is a 100% substitute made from synthetic materials. But it also consists of a fabric base, which is typically a cotton knit on which non-toxic polyurethane is simply applied. Eco leather is breathable, has solid strength and resistance to abrasion and can be practically any color.

Its problem, compared to real leather, is only in its durability, but this would definitely not matter to the cover, because few leather iPhone covers survive the life of the phone itself. In addition, the advantage is a significantly lower price. And as we know from the Android competition, various manufacturers are not afraid to use eco leather directly on their devices, for example Xiaomi 13T series.

Too similar to skin

FineWoven covers suffer from defects, especially fraying, as you can see <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1932/8043/files/200721_ODSTOUPENI_BEZ_UDANI_DUVODU__EN.pdf?v=1595428404" data-gt-href-en="https://en.notsofunnyany.com/">here</a>. Apple responded to these reports by sending a manual to its employees with instructions on how to talk to customers about products made from this material (you can read what it says <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1932/8043/files/200721_ODSTOUPENI_BEZ_UDANI_DUVODU__EN.pdf?v=1595428404" data-gt-href-en="https://en.notsofunnyany.com/">here</a>). But all we see is a typical skin problem, so it's a wonder there's such a hype around it.

If you scratch the skin, it's permanent "damage" to it too, just like squeezing the MagSafe wheel. But with leather, the label "patina" can be used, it is difficult to do with synthetic material. Despite all the shortcomings of FineWoven, it can be easily stated that Apple has succeeded in a hussar piece - it came up with a new artificial material that actually resembles skin more than the company itself probably intended, both in the good and the bad.

However, we have not yet observed any flaws in our tested cover for the iPhone 15 Pro Max or the MagSafe wallet, and we can actually only praise the material. So far, both with regard to durability and comfort of use. So if you like it, don't let all the hateful headlines sway you.
