The new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max are the first ever – and so far the only – phones from Apple to be bundled with a more powerful 18W adapter with a USB-C connector and fast charging support. All other iPhones come with a basic 5W USB-A charger. We therefore decided to test the difference in charging speed between the two adapters. We performed the test not only on the iPhone 11 Pro, but also on the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus.

The new USB-C adapter offers an output voltage of 9V at a current of 2A. However, the essential specification is not only the higher power of 18 W, but especially the USB-PD (Power Delivery) support. It is she who assures us that the adapter supports fast charging of iPhones, for which Apple guarantees a 50% charge in 30 minutes. An interesting fact is that when using fast charging on the new iPhone 11 Pro, the battery recharges a little faster than on previous models. At the same time, it has a capacity of 330 mAh more than in the case of the iPhone X.

Battery capacities of tested iPhones:

  • iPhone 11 Pro - 3046 mAh
  • iPhone X - 2716 mAh
  • iPhone 8 Plus - 2691 mAh

In contrast, the original adapter with a USB-A connector offers a voltage of 5V at a current of 1A. The total power thus amounts to 5W, which is of course reflected in the charging speed. Most iPhone models charge from 0 to 100% in an average of 3 hours. However, it is worth noting that slower charging is generally more gentle on the battery and does not sign so much on the degradation of its maximum capacity.

Testing

All measurements were performed under the same conditions. Charging always started from 1% battery. The phones were on the whole time (with the display off) and were in flight mode. All running applications were closed prior to the start of testing and the phones had a low power mode active, which automatically turned off when the battery reached 80%.

The tests show that thanks to the new USB-C adapter, the iPhone 11 Pro charges 1 hour and 15 minutes faster. We can observe fundamental differences especially after the first hour of charging, when with the 18W adapter the phone is charged to 86%, while with the 5W charger only to 38%. The situation is similar for the other two tested models, although the ones with the 18W adapter charge to 100% a quarter of an hour slower than the iPhone 11 Pro.
