Apple has announced that it will hold another virtual event on Monday, October 18 at 19 p.m. ET. The most likely scenario is that they will introduce redesigned 14 and 16" MacBook Pro models with a faster version of the M1 chip, often referred to as the M1X. But will the worldwide shortage of chips affect the availability of computers?

Of course, nothing is certain until Apple announces it themselves. But if we look back at history, almost every new Mac announced at an Apple event in the past five years has been available to order on the same day they were introduced. The only exception was the 24-inch iMac at the beginning of this year, and the question is whether the new MacBook Pros will not follow its trend.

History of the introduction of Mac computers

2016: The first MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar were announced at an Apple event on Thursday, October 27, 2016, and were available to order the same day. However, delivery to early buyers took a while, as it only took 2 to 3 weeks. The first lucky ones received their machines on Monday 14 November.

2017: At WWDC 2017, which began with the opening keynote on Monday, June 5, the new MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air models were introduced, as well as the iMac. All the devices were immediately available to order, and their delivery was lightning fast as it started two days later on June 7th.

2018: On October 30, 2018, Apple introduced not only the new Mac mini, but above all the completely redesigned MacBook Air with a retina display and a body combining 12" Macbooks and MacBook Pros. Both computers were on pre-sale on the same day, with deliveries starting on November 7.

Possible appearance of the new MacBook Pro:

2020: MacBook Air, 13" MacBook Pro and Mac mini were the company's first trio of computers that it equipped with its own and for subsequent development revolutionary M1 chip. This happened on Tuesday, November 10, while orders started on the same day, and on November 17, customers themselves could enjoy the first pieces.

2021: The new and appropriately colorful 24" iMac with the M1 chip was announced at the company's event on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, and was available for pre-order from Friday, April 30. However, the iMac was delivered to the first customers only from Friday, May 21, and immediately after the start of the pre-sale, the delivery period began to increase dramatically. To this day, it has practically not stabilized, because if you order this computer directly from the Apple Online Store, you will still have to wait a month for it.

New Macs announced only by press release are also usually available to order on the same day of release. Namely, it was, for example, Fr 16" MacBook Pro in 2019 and still the latest 27" iMac in August 2020. Omitted from the list are the iMac Pro and Mac Pro, which Apple introduced at WWDC but didn't start selling until many months later.

So what is the result of this look into the past? If Apple introduces new computers on Monday, there are practically two possibilities when it can put them on pre-sale – Friday, October 22 is less likely, and Friday, October 29 is more likely. But, of course, starting the pre-sale is only one thing. If you are quick and order the news now, you will probably receive them in 3 to 4 weeks. But if you hesitate, you can only hope that it will arrive at least by Christmas.
