In most cases, we discussed the use of specific technologies or applications in the Technika bez očin series, which most of you will not try in practice. But as they say, the exception proves the rule. On Sunday, the new social network Clubhouse was launched in the Czech Republic, and today we will analyze its main advantages and disadvantages. In addition, I will try to describe to you why I included it in the series about technologies for blind users.

How does the whole social network actually work?

Whether we are talking about Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok or YouTube, all these social networks are primarily based on visual content - either photos or videos. But Clubhouse works on a completely different principle – you communicate only by voice. You can either create a certain room or join one of the existing ones and discuss the topic specified in the room. It is not possible to play a recording of the conversations, communication takes place only in real time. You can leave or rejoin the room at any time.
Registration is simple and complex at the same time. It is necessary for you to receive an invitation from someone who is already using Clubhouse, and considering that there are still not many such people in our country, it is quite difficult to activate an account. So far, the Clubhouse is mainly home to YouTubers, influencers and politicians. Another interesting thing is that Clubhouse is only available for iOS phones, you would look for the app in Google Play in vain.

Would it finally be a full-fledged social network for the visually impaired?

Personally, I definitely do not spend as much time on social networks as I would be able to devote to them. From the point of view of most users, the most interesting content is visual, and the posts look accordingly. But to tell you the truth, I really like the idea of being able to communicate only through voice, and I can work or rest while sharing. Whether the application will be accessible is another matter, but probably a social network is coming, where it will not matter whether users have vision problems or not.

However, what I am curious about is how the Clubhouse will look when more people switch to it. I can't imagine rooms where maybe 2000 users join at the same time and discuss one topic without running away from it. In addition to the fact that there is not much chance of reaching everyone, unlike a discussion on Facebook or Twitter, this is a time-consuming activity. Furthermore, I can't quite imagine how inappropriate content will be censored on Clubhouse. We have to wait for a while for the reaction of the wider society and news in the field of this social network, it is not even certain whether this way of sharing will catch on as a new trend or not - users of social networks are not completely used to communicating only by voice. Most likely, in one of the other series of Technique without eyes, we will sharpen our skills one more time on the social network Clubhouse.
