Apple will probably introduce its "lightweight" iPhone model with the nickname SE in the spring of next year. If we then look at the past trend of what technologies the previous generations contained and take into account the company's current offer, it is practically clear what we can expect from it.

The first generation iPhone SE, which was based on the 5S model, was presented by Apple on March 21, 2016. It therefore had the same dimensions and a 4" display, but because it was a newer device, a more powerful chip was also present, i.e. the Apple A9. The 1st generation of the SE model was available in memory variants of 16 and 64 GB, but a year later the company doubled the memory capacity to 32 and 128 GB. The color variants were space gray, silver, gold and rose gold. Apple stopped selling the phone in September 2018, introduced the successor only in April 2020, and you can still buy it in the Apple Online Store.

Its design is based on the iPhone 8. It is thus the last representative of the iPhone portfolio that is not yet equipped with the bezel-less display that Apple first used in the X model, which was just introduced alongside the eight-series portfolio. It was also the first to feature Face ID. However, with the SE 2nd generation model, you still authenticate yourself through the desktop button present below the display and offering Touch ID.

Two memory variants are available, namely 64 and 128 GB, but you could also get a 13 GB version before the presentation of the iPhone 256. There are three colors - black, white and (PRODUCT)RED red, which is a difference from the basic iPhone 8 series. The latter was available in space gray, silver and gold. The heart of the device is the A13 Bionic chip, which Apple used in its flagship, the iPhone 11 series, last fall. Everything about the camera has remained the same, but thanks to the more powerful chip, the SE 2nd generation can use portrait mode with its lighting effects. The current price is CZK 11 for 690 GB and CZK 64 for 13 GB.

Name and design

The next generation iPhone SE is generally expected to arrive as early as next year. If so, it will happen at the turn of March and April. It is safe to say that Apple will once again refer to this model as the iPhone SE, and only in further details will you read that it is its 3rd generation. The question remains as to which model of the previous phone the novelty will be based on. The most likely is the XR model, which, by the way, disappeared from the company's official offer with the introduction of the iPhone 13. With this step, Apple would completely switch to Face ID and get rid of the already somewhat archaic design.

iPhone XR:

Performance

Previous generations of iPhone SEs were always equipped with the latest chip that Apple brought to the line in the fall of the previous year. So if the iPhone 13 contains the A15 Bionic chip, it is certain that the upcoming model would also receive it. This will give it long lasting life and support. Along with that comes memory. Since the iPhone 13 is equipped with 4GB of RAM, there is no reason to believe that this capacity would not be present in the new device as well.

iPhone SE 2nd generation:

Internal storage

Determining storage isn't too complicated either. If we look at the trend set by the iPhones currently sold by the company, we can also find the iPhone 11 and 12 in the menu. Apple sells both in the 64GB variant. If the new SE model brought more storage, it would be unnecessarily expensive. With this entry-level series, the emphasis should be on the price, and 64 GB is just enough to satisfy any undemanding user. It's more complicated with higher storage settings. Here, Apple can list 128 or 256 GB, or even both options.

Price

There is no reason to think that the iPhone SE (3rd generation) will drop in price. Logically, it could therefore copy the current price, i.e. CZK 11 for 690 GB and CZK 64 for 13 GB. But with the iPhone 190 generation, we have seen that if you want, you can get cheaper. But to think that the new iPhone would be sold below the ten thousand mark is rather foolish.

But it will be interesting to see what Apple will do with the iPhone 11. It is currently offered for 14 CZK in the case of 490GB and 64 CZK in the case of 15GB capacity. The new SE based on the XR model would be significantly more powerful, with the same body and display, but only one camera (which, however, also handles portrait mode). Even since the iPhone 990 is still available in Apple's portfolio, the 128 should clear the field.

Other possible scenarios

We are starting from the most logical one, i.e. that the prototype for the 3rd generation iPhone SE will really be the first "cheap" bezel-less iPhone. Model X offered two lenses and steel frames, which the most affordable iPhone definitely does not need. But there are, of course, more options that Apple can resort to.

iPhone SE 3rd generation concept:

The worst is certainly the possibility that it would use the chassis of the iPhone 8 again. Everything would remain the same as in the previous generation, only the performance would be improved again. The more interesting option is that the company would use the iPhone XR, but for reasons of Face ID claims, it would use the fingerprint reader that we know from the iPad Air and iPad mini, i.e. the one in the side button. We could also get rid of the cut-out, when Apple would only use a hole for the front camera. It sounds nice, but it's unlikely.

The most interesting option is, of course, a completely new design based, for example, on the 12th or 13th generation. But where would we get with the price? Of course, this would no longer be the most affordable iPhone, which should also bring 100% 5G support. However, Apple could also implement MagSafe into it, which certainly any older recycled product will not receive. The battery life and its capacity will simply depend on the model that the novelty will be based on.
