Yesterday the third major iOS 10 update was released. Among others, it brings the new APFS file system, which can free up a significant amount of space.
From the user's (literal) point of view, the most interesting news will probably be iOS 10.3 faster animations, better organization of settings associated with Apple ID and the ability to find lost AirPods. By far the biggest change is the transition to a completely new file system, APFS (Apple File System), developed by Apple specifically for modern operating systems and flash storage.
On the website of Jablíčkára se article introducing APFS discovered some time ago.
The file system structures the data on the physical storage, and its properties thus have a great influence on the way the operating system works with the data, i.e. how it is stored and retrieved. Therefore, one of the benefits of APFS is more efficient work with storage, which does not mean that files will take up less space, but it applies to the file system itself and perhaps also some parts of the operating system, possibly some types of data, for example metadata, which is information about data parameters stored on disk.
In practice, this means that after switching to iOS 10.3 with the Apple File System, all users should notice more free space (without losing their own data, of course) and some even an increase in capacity. This never reaches the same value as the capacity of unformatted storage, partly because of the necessary presence of the file system and its way of working with data.
Among the members of our editorial staff, for example, we observed an increase in the capacity of free space by almost 1 GB for the iPad Air 32 1,5 GB, and an increase of free space by 7 MB for the almost new iPhone 32 800 GB. In short, we observed hundreds of megabytes to units of gigabytes more free space for all devices.
Users with iOS devices of higher capacities can acc messages Apple Insider see an increase in capacity up to more than 3,5 GB and free space by almost 8 GB.
I have a question. With iOS 10.3 (iP 6s Plus), when I want to send a photo via the Photos app to, for example, Messenger, the app always fails. Restarting the app didn't help either. Zene 10.3 (iP SE) works. Can someone please try it, if it's iOS or an app? Thanks a lot!
I try it on iP6 iOS 10.3 and it doesn't work. Wife iP5 iOS 10.21 same error message.
On the iPhone 7 Plus it also throws an error…
This seems to be one of the frequently bugged update issues...there should be an update out in a matter of days to fix it.
I have iP 6S Plus 10.3 and it works without problems…
IP7 10.3 photos via messenger without problems.
it's a messenger bug… just update the messenger and everything is fine. Facebook quickly fixed the error
iPad Air 2 16GB - increase of free space by 1GB
iPhone 7 Plus 128 GB - increase of free space by 3,16 GB
iPhone 5S 32GB, from 889MB before upgrade to 3.5GB after. Very decent!
Hmm, the update doesn't work on Ipad 4 anymore :(
The update also deleted a lot of the disk cache for me, which would explain the significant increase in space...
From 28,5GB to 33,3GB of free space. For the 128GB iPhone 6S. Nice..
It seems to me that the apps start faster, do you feel it too?
How they managed to do this without formatting the drive on my almost full phone is a mystery to me. That upgrade went smoothly and quickly. Thumbs up!
The free space is also about 1GB on the SE, but I can't charge the new one when the phone is switched off. The system always starts up after connecting the charger.
New feature? Can it be turned off?
It wasn't always like this.
iPhone SE 64GB added 1,1GB
and where can i download it?
to save.to
On my iPhone 6+ 128Gb, almost 3Gb of memory was freed up after the update, great :-)
After the update, Wi-Fi stopped working on all Apple devices, my wife has a PC and it works for her, so I don't know, I hope they fix it soon
After the update, SE won't log in to the apple server and won't verify my apple id. What an update, another fuck up.
messenger crashes on my iPhone SE after the update, is this happening to anyone?
