When choosing a computer, most decide on the initial purchase price. Furthermore, they are no longer interested in the fact of how much they will pay for the selected device in a secondary way, i.e. for its power supply with electricity. High-performance devices are, of course, serious eaters, but Apple has managed to balance performance and consumption with its computers. 

How much will you pay to use your device per year? Do you know it? For mobile phones, it is not at all dizzying, and on average it is around 40 CZK. With computers, however, it is already different, and this also takes into account whether you are using a fixed workstation, perhaps with a connected monitor, or a portable computer. It is true that a computer is an integral part of our lives, and the pandemic, which forced us to work from home, has clearly affected this. And employers' utility bills have gone down because they've moved into our homes.

Of course, we use computers not only for work, but also for entertainment, communication and other connections with the world. Compared to other computers, MacBooks have the advantage of long battery life combined with low power consumption, so they can be an ideal choice, even if you reach for a desktop Mac. After all, with the M2 chip, Apple started the next generation of computer chips with even greater speed and economy than the M1. Everything runs faster and with far less energy consumption. But how big are the numbers?

The M1 MacBook Air "eats up" something like 30 kWh per year during daily use, which at an average price of CZK 5,81 per kWh in 2021 amounts to approximately CZK 174 per year. For a 16" MacBook Pro, this amounts to 127,75 kWh per year, which is already 740 CZK. But look at comparable machines of the competition, which need more energy for the same performance, and you can easily exceed the sum of thousands of crowns. However, since energy prices are still rising, it is appropriate to address not only the power, but also exactly how much energy the device needs to run.

The magical acronym of SoC 

It is logical that powerful devices that can handle multiple tasks at once have the highest consumption. This is determined by the frequency of the processor, but also by the technology used in its production (this is also why the numbers of nm are constantly being reduced to lower values), the number of cores, the type of graphics card, etc. By combining everything with the operating memory into one chip, Apple creates differences between the individual components , which need to communicate with each other, reduced the distance to a minimum, and thus the energy requirements were also reduced. If you want to save even a small amount of money in the long run, simply keep in mind that each of your actions consumes a certain amount of energy, which you simply pay for.
