The Studio Display is Apple's new and also appropriately expensive display, which the company introduced together with the Mac Studio computer. It stands out not only for its price, but also for its options, as it contains the A13 Bionic chip known from iPhones. Even this product is not perfect, and a significant part of the criticism is aimed at its integrated camera.

After the first ones reviews because its quality was subjected to relatively strong criticism. On paper, everything looks fine, because it has a 12 MPx resolution, an f/2,4 aperture and a 122-degree angle of view, and it is also capable of Centering the shot, but it suffers from significant noise and poor contrast. There was no satisfaction even with regard to the aforementioned centering of the shot.

Apple has issued a statement that this is a bug that will be fixed with a system update. But because this display is smart, Apple can release updates for it relatively easily. Therefore, a beta version of the update is already available to developers, which is labeled "Apple Studio Display Firmware Update 15.5". So it might seem that when the update is officially released, everything will be fixed. But that is a false assumption in this case.

Poor quality is not a software bug

Although the update solves certain shortcomings with regard to noise and contrast, which the developers confirm, it also works better with cropping, but the results are still quite pale. The problem is not in the software, but in the hardware. Although Apple proudly declares that 12 MPx is enough for sharp pictures, and this is proven in the case of iPhones. But while iPhones have a wide-angle front camera, here it is an ultra-wide-angle one, so that it can fully use the new Center Stage feature.

It uses machine learning in particular to always center the image on the person present during the video call, or several people in the shot. Since there is no zoom, everything is digitally cropped, which is also the case with regular photos. It means that no matter what Apple does with the software, it can't get more out of the hardware.

Does it matter at all?

The front camera of the Studio Display is intended for video calls and video conferences, where many other participants have devices with even worse camera quality. You probably won't be shooting YouTube videos or taking portrait photos with this display, so it's actually fine for those calls. And this also with regard to Centering the shot.

But I personally have a little problem with that. Although it can look effective in the case of one person, once there are more of them, it also suffers from many shortcomings. This is because the shot is constantly zooming in and out and moving from right to left, and in certain ways it can be worse than better. Therefore, it would be necessary to fine-tune the various algorithms more and not to try to really capture everything on the scene, but at least the important things.
