WWDC ended more than two weeks ago, but the promised summary of the biggest developer conference is here! Again, I'm happy to answer any questions. In this part of the article, I would like to share my impressions from the five days of the conference and the specific benefits for developers.

The latest on the spot

as I already am wrote in the opening article, Apple has slightly changed its approach in releasing new iOS for this year – previously a beta version, for example iOS 4, was already available in March, but now it was only presented at the conference. That's why almost all the lectures were full of information about the news of iOS 5. Whether it's about the programming possibilities of using iCloud, integration with Twitter, the possibility of skinning applications using the new API, and others and others - each of the lectures made it possible to quickly understand the issues of the given area. Of course, the new iOS is available to all developers, not just those who were at the conference, but at the time of WWDC, there was almost no (solid) documentation for iOS 5. Most of the presentations were conceived very professionally, the speakers were always key people from Apple who have been dealing with the issue for a long time. Of course, it could happen that a certain lecture did not suit someone, but it was always possible to choose from another 2-3 running in parallel. By the way, the video recordings of the lectures are already completely available - free download from the address http://developer.apple.com/videos/wwdc/2011/.

Lab for developers

Lectures can be downloaded thanks to the Internet and there is no need to travel to San Francisco for them. But what can save hours or days of research and browsing developer forums were - labs. They took place from Tuesday to Friday and were divided according to thematic blocks - for example, focusing on iCloud, media and the like. These labs worked on a one-to-one system, which means that each visitor was always attended by one Apple developer. I myself used this option several times and was delighted - I went through the code of our application with an expert on the given topic, we solved really specific and highly specialized things.

Those who reject our applications...

In addition to meetings with Apple developers, it was also possible to consult with the team that deals with the quality and approval of applications. Again, it was a very interesting experience, one of our apps was rejected and after our appeal (yes, it really can be used by developers and it works) it was conditionally approved with the condition that we need to make some adjustments before the next version. That way, I could personally discuss the best course of action with the review team. Similar consultations could also be used regarding the GUI design of applications.

Man is alive not only by work

As at most conferences, there was no lack of accompanying program at the one from Apple. Whether it was the ceremonial announcement of the best applications for 2011 - Apple Design Awards (the list of announced applications can be found here: http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/ada/), evening garden parties at Yerba Garden, the final "space" lecture by Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11 crew member) or lots of unofficial meetings organized directly by the developers. Apart from the laboratories, this is probably the most valuable thing that a person takes away from the conference. Worldwide contacts, opportunities for cooperation, inspiration.

So see you in 2012 at WWDC. I believe that other Czech companies will also send their representatives there and we will be able to go out for a beer in San Francisco in more numbers than just two :-).
