Streaming services have been growing in popularity for several years now, and there are no signs of this market slowing down. Sure, Jimmy Iovine criticized these services for the impossibility of economic growth due to the absence of exclusive content, but this does not affect the growing statistics of these services. The latest number that services like Apple Music and Spotify can claim is 1 trillion.

Just 1 trillion songs were listened to by American users using streaming services alone in 2019, according to the Nielsen analytics company, which represents year-on-year growth of 30%. It also means that these services are the predominant form of listening to music in the US today. With a huge lead, they cut 82% of the imaginary pie.

It's also the first time ever that these services have managed to surpass the 1 trillion listen mark. As the main reasons for the growth, Nielsen cites the growth of subscribers especially for the Apple Music, Spotify and YouTube Music services, as well as the release of expected albums from artists such as Taylor Swift.

In contrast, physical album sales fell 19% last year and today account for just 9% of all music distribution in the country. Nielsen also reports that hip-hop was the most popular genre last year at 28%, followed by rock at 20% and pop music at 14%.

Post Malone was the most streamed artist overall last year, followed by Drake, who is also the most streamed artist on streaming services. Other artists in the Top 5 list are Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande.

Data for specific services have not been published, the last time we saw official numbers for Apple Music was in June of last year. At the time, the service had 60 million active subscribers.
