When you click on the Mac product line, you see two laptops and four desktops. In the case of MacBooks, this means the MacBook Air and Pro series, and in the case of Macs, the mini, Studio, Pro and iMac models. Is this enough choice for the customer?

It can be said that everyone will choose between the desktop. There is a basic model in the mini model, professional options in the Studio model, and a Pro version for the most demanding. Although we only have a 24" model for the iMac, it would certainly be useful to expand this range by a larger one, but whoever wants this modern All-in-one solution from Apple has the option. In the case of the MacBook, it is significantly cut down to only two lines.

To a certain extent, the introduction of the M3 MacBook Airs, which actually phased out the M1 model, is to blame for this. The entire line is thus identical in design and starts with the 13" model with the M2 chip and the amount of CZK 29. The basic novelty with the M990 chip starts only 3 more, the 2" model costs 15 CZK. If we don't go into extreme configurations, you will pay CZK 38 for the 15" M3 Air with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. By the way, this is the same amount that a 50" MacBook Pro with an M14 chip, 3GB of RAM and a 8GB SSD disk starts at. The 512" model has a starting value of CZK 16.

But could there be another model wedged between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro? Rather not here, as higher configurations of the Air cover it. Above 50 CZK, it's quite full considering the different configurations of the 14" Pro model, which is graduated in approx. 5 increments depending on how the RAM, disk and, of course, the chip variant grows, where we have the M3 Pro and M3 Max.

Is there room for a "MacBook" return?

But in recent history, Apple had a wider portfolio of MacBooks, when the Air and Pro models were accompanied by a MacBook that no longer carried any nickname. Before 2010, it was a small plastic model before Apple completely switched to aluminum unibody. In 2015, he introduced the 12" MacBook, which did not gain much traction on the market, and in 2018 it was actually replaced by the 13" MacBook Air.

Last year we saw an increase, when at WWDC23 the company introduced the 15" MacBook Air, which has now received a successor with an M3 chip. But the M1 MacBook Air has definitely dropped out of our portfolio. On the one hand, there is the fact that in terms of design, it didn't have to fit into the portfolio too much, because it was based on the appearance of the MacBook from 2015. But Apple now offers us four MacBook models, which all look exactly the same and differ in screen size. There is a 13" Air, 14" Pro, 15" Air and 16" Pro. So why reduce the diagonal and come back with the 12" one?

Previously, the Air also had two diagonals, when the 13" one was complemented by a smaller display, namely 11". We received its first generation in 2010 and the last in 2015, when it was just replaced by an inch larger MacBook (you can also look at the history of the MacBook Air here). I personally use a Mac mini for office work and a 13" M2 MacBook Air for travel. I chose it because there is simply no smaller option, but I would be happy to settle for it. I need to work occasionally and as "lightly" as possible while traveling.

I don't want to carry a 15" diagonal in a packed backpack, when not only the dimensions but also the weight are a problem. Having owned a 12" MacBook (two generations of it), I know that it had its place in the market and that it was an amazingly compact machine. Now we also have a new form of design, which will certainly not change for a year, so we can't hope that Apple will keep the size of the display, but reduce the chassis. So I personally see that yes, there is still room for a MacBook, and it would be enough to reduce the size of the current Air by that inch. Even if the price here fell by only 2 CZK, it would still be more advantageous for my needs.

I'm still amazed at how Apple is a giant company, how limited their portfolio is. A few phones per year, a few computers, a few watches and headphones, one smart box and two speakers, which it doesn't even distribute to all markets. One design is the same for all models of the series. Isn't it too binding, limiting and just not enough?
