Is Windows Mobile 7 mobile a real competitor to iOS? Or is this just the missing nail in the coffin of Windows on mobile? It is interesting that this operating system was supposed to be a full-fledged competitor to iOS, but the reality is somewhere else. Let's compare these 2 systems.
I know absolutely nothing about the Windows 7 system for mobile phones, I'm just comparing it with what I read on the Czech promo pages for this system. It is simply enough for a professional to review.
Basic functionalities
W7 | iOS | |

Copy & paste | There is no need | YEAR |
multitasking | Multi? | YES, edited |
MMS | Nobody uses that anymore, we managers have Exchange | YEAR |
Video calls | Get rid of Satan | YEAR |
Mass storage | ee | :'-( |
It's a blow to all those who cursed the iPhone for not having the option of copy&paste. Windows Phone 7 copied the older device really perfectly, even with this small defect, which, according to the old Apple "lubbers", no one needed.

It is interesting that although everyone wants to have flash in their mobile phone, especially the notorious iOS complainers, Microsoft did not listen to their longing moans, probably quietly understood the simple formula.
Flash + Mobile device = Juiced battery in record time
What surprised me, however, is the fact that Microsoft did not even implement Silverlight support, which is supposedly becoming the next standard.

MSN support | YES, third party apps | YES, third party apps |
MS Exchange support was introduced in iOS 3.x, however, it wasn't natively able to access multiple MS Exchange accounts until iOS 4. If my old memory serves me correctly, WM 6.5 was able to do this, unfortunately not natively, but through the OWA "frontend". I don't know how WM7 is, but I guess I've seen that even a MS device can't accommodate 2 Exchange accounts on one device, they should be ashamed of themselves.
Today, iOS is already able to work with MS-infested corporate infrastructure, and perhaps even better than things from Microsoft themselves, viz. impossibility of using 2 or more exchange accounts on 1 device. I just don't understand one thing. Apple killed Exchange support before 2007, but I don't understand why Microsoft does it too? Office 2011 for Mac OS has it, but why does Windows 7 phone have it, when Microsoft has its own resources to access its own system. It's a fact that I don't know how it is with Office 2010. Anyway, that they would finally ditch the whole concept, or that they would learn from Apple to get rid of the old weights that drag them to the ground? That they would finally provide support for all APIs in Windows 8 that have been with them since Windows 95, maybe even earlier? I don't know about you, but as for me, I see progress.

Office is handled quite well on the iPhone. I was writing Word documents on it myself right in the pub when I had an idea that was worth it and I directly sent them to the relevant people for evaluation. Anyway, what I don't understand is the much vaunted full sync with Facebook that "pros" can't be without. In my opinion, Facebook is just a server where we meet people we haven't seen in years, or to write what we have for lunch, but for serious work? When there are sites like Xing and LinkedIn? Will I still visit there only if I need a new job? Let me be. I admit that I have a few real professionals in my field on Facebook, but I have contacts with them directly on my phone and I am in contact with them other than through this site. However, it is clear that we are all different and we all have our own needs.
Navigation
W7 | iOS | |
---|---|---|
Tom Tom, iGo | NE | YES, both |
Sygic, Copilot | NE | YES, both |
Turistic maps | NE | YES, I don't know how good |
It is clear that the iPhone is leading the way here. Although phones have a GPS chip, they do not yet have full support from navigation manufacturers. It's really funny that this was also blamed on the iPhone, so of course I have to dig in too.
It is equally interesting that the reaction of people who like Windows Mobile devices and look at the iPhone with hostility. Perhaps they also criticize him for not being able to transform into a beautiful lover, but they consider the W7 device to be absolutely perfect because of the "flaws" that were removed long ago with the iPhone. More or less, it seems to me that iPhone and WM device users have nothing to blame. Both devices have their pros and cons. Although the iPhone started the "new" direction of mobile smartphones and WM is just copying it, we will see in time who will succeed in this market and who will just go along.
I demonstrated what the iPhone can and can't do compared to Windows Phone 7. Although I bashed and humiliated WP7, I think it has its place in the market, if only because it's just another competition that will evolve. And for those who did not understand the light-hearted tone of the article and are going to flame under it, I say this: "Don't take life seriously, you won't get out of it alive anyway".
"Roaming automatically turns off data transfers" IMO the iPhone has.
"Flash support" in the iOS column should be the same as WP7, to be fair, because what SkyFire has is simply not flash support. And everywhere where third-party applications solve it, the verdict is questionable, because sooner or later those applications will come. GPS navigation is still quite relevant, because it is not an application that anyone can create.
This is off topic, but my alarm stopped working, it doesn't work on 4G or 3GS. It works if I return the date to 2010. Has anyone encountered this?
Yes, I also encountered the malfunctioning of the alarm clock today, the alarm clock was set for ten and at a quarter to eleven I look to see that it has already rung... I have an iPhone 4
Hello,
I have the same problem, but from what I have read, this bug should be resolved by itself on January 3. For now, the alarm clock works in such a way that you have to set the alarm clock to repeat. I tried and it works
It was already written about somewhere... supposedly it will start working again on January 3rd...
BTW: Please add "working alarm clock" to comparison columns: WP7: YES, iPhone: occasionally (unreliable) :(
From January 3rd? Well, it's great that today I overslept because of it and almost missed my flight...
You will probably never be able to use the iPhone as an alarm clock again... it's quite a lottery... just use some non-Apple application...
Sorry Petra, but a rather weak comparison. You haven't tried some of the rated features (e.g. Exchange) on either of them, so the comparison is not very objective, you only selected things for the rating where the iPhone is better, and which it only learned in its umpteenth upgrade. So it seems to me similarly low as when they compared the iPhone to the Nokia 3310. So, below average for Jablíčkář, and I don't even have to be from the hooligan camp.
I share the same passion for iOS products as the author, and I myself have criticized the competition a lot for their inability to do things properly.
On the other hand, I think that comparing iOS, which has undergone 4 years of development, with WP7, which has not been on the market for even half a year, is quite unfair.
Personally, I think that WP7 is not even a competitor to iOS because it attacks a little bit on a different segment of the market. iOS has its client base and WP7 won't change that much. Rather, it threatens Android, which people buy when they want a smart phone but the iPhone is expensive. Preň is the competition because it is more stylish than Android and simpler. Android is more for geeks.
Well, who is most at risk are simple phones or phones with the Samsung Bada system.
I had a good time on the funny comments in the tables ;)
Too bad there are some inconsistencies..
Mass Storage can be done using diskaid, for example.
Silverlight - instead of "NO" it should have been "God forbid!" :D
If there was a race to see which one drains the battery first, I would bet on flash, it's just a shame that the rate would be very low :D
I personally travel a lot, so I know that there is an option to disable data transfers when roaming. Settings-General-Network-Data roaming.. the team can be set whether we want to have internet also abroad.
Syncing with Facebook - there are several apps for this.
The navigations are quite unfair if the creators of the navigations haven't had enough time to port, not to mention the fact that this system is not widespread and therefore uninteresting for them.
You have an opinion that I can completely agree with.
It's fun to compare WP7, which is barely 3 months old, with iOS, which is already 4 years old.
As for iOS vs WP7 competition. WP7 went in the direction of iOS, but not the way. He does many things differently, and you may laugh at me, but I think he does it better. I know what I'm talking about because I just switched from iOS to WP7. Despite all the C&P and multitasking quirks, I think it's an excellent system and has great potential. In addition, Microsoft announced that the missing functions will be paid for in the January and February updates. If I were a devotee of flame and digging, I will ironically note that I will wait for those features shorter than you on iOS...
Flash doesn't really have it, but Microsoft hasn't ruled out support. Silverlight itself probably won't even support it, because Microsoft has agreed with partners on a gradual transition to HTML5 (their Bing already supports it, for example, today).
Yes, iOS has the option to disable data roaming. And for a relatively long time.
The difference between iOS and WP7 regarding Facebook is that FB is "integrated" in WP7. Although a bit non-standard form, but very pleasant. However, for full support of all FB functions, it is necessary to use a 3rd party app.
As for navigation, they are on their way. And Microsoft announced native navigation using Bing maps. It should be an equivalent alternative to Android and its maps.
Overall, I think Mr. Sourka's article is quite unfortunate. I understand that he is a big fan of Apple/iOS, but comparing iOS (which he also obviously doesn't know everything about) with a system that he knows nothing about is a bit strange. I would have expected a more serious tone, and I find some of the hits pathetic.
Please don't take it that I am offended and that I want to bring down the author. Well, a bit of respect and more time spent looking for sources for the article would only be beneficial. Maybe I'm retarded, but I didn't really notice the "lightened tone" there.
I wish you a pleasant day and all the best for the new year.
Just for the record: the mobile version of Windows running on various smartphones and other devices has been around since 2000. The fact that Microsoft completely redesigned the user interface in Windows Phone 7 and removed quite essential things that were already in previous versions is a bummer. For how many years have they been preparing it, will they complete other patches to complete the missing functions?
On the contrary, I think it's funny (and the author puts it down to various would-be reviews written according to promotional materials) that: I don't know anything about Windows 7 for mobile phones, I'm just comparing it with what I read on Czech promo sites.
I agree that mobile Windows has been around for a long time. But WP7 is a completely different product and is not a successor to Windows Mobile. I dare to compare it to Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2. Although both are OS, they both aim elsewhere.
Personally, I don't mind the fact that there is no multitasking (it's stolen from me anyway, and even on iOS it just has a state) and that it has errors. Paradoxically, in order to succeed, Microsoft must and wants to listen to what users want (and it has its official website for that). So there is a very high chance that eventually users will create WP7 in their own image. On the other hand, I recognize that they took their time with the development and the cool stuff is not in the "base".
Maybe I'm a cracker, but I really don't think it's funny :((( When creating an article that compares both systems, I wouldn't brag about it. The only funny thing I found was that he doesn't even have knowledge in the field of iOS...
I confirm Exchange 2003 support on iOS 4.
Hello,
if I was writing an article about comparing iOS and WP7, I wouldn't write the sentence "I know absolutely nothing about Windows 7 for mobile phones" (even if I took it out of context a little). Or I wouldn't have written the article...
Otherwise, I agree with the impression that WP7 tried to copy the older iOS with its shortcomings.
PS I'm an apple sheep :)
The author is obviously a fanatic and a real "sheep" as I often hear. It is precisely because of such people that we are called sheep who listen to the great Steve. How about adding that the alarm clock works on Windows Phone 7? Because it doesn't work on iPhone for the second time.
I'm an Apple enthusiast, I have an iPhone, Mac, Apple peripherals, but these articles about nothing, that's a tragedy. Even Radek Hulán doesn't write such rants, even if he is a bit of a demagogue - but he still knows how to write objectively. If this was supposed to be an attempt at a tip, then poor. I believe that it will only excite a few new fans who die hard to love Apple and cannot admit that even Apple has its faults.
To summarize, I saw a GOOD comparison of the two systems that had benefits for those looking to move to WP7 or iOS. This is just a table of delusions and biased talk with a bit of wannabe-humor that has no beneficial value. Next time you write, please try to be a little more sober. It's not about us, we'll find the information elsewhere, it's about your business card.
I agree with the opinion that because of such statements as made by the author of the article, we are called sheep, fanboys and the like.
Personally, I have already had a few discussions with Radko Hulán and I do not think that he is an objective person. Raz praises the HTC touch HD for its high resolution and criticizes the iPhone for its low resolution, not being able to display as much as the touch HD. When retina arrived (which beat the resolution of HTC phones) it suddenly says that the resolution is too high. I experienced many such biased statements from him.
Radek Hulán is a demagogue, and demagoguery is exactly what you encountered - but if you have fun with him in person, it's a different story. Rather, the point is that the comparison of Android with Windows Mobile, which was exclusively for his needs, was as a result many times more objective than this product.
I never want to say that Mr. Hulán is an objective person, but he can write an article objectively. His bias towards Apple is as pathetic as the author's bias towards Windows Phone 7.
Patrik, the fact that you did not understand the author's slight exaggeration does not mean that others did not understand it as well.
rADo never writes an article like this, he writes much bigger rants/nonsense. You are not right that RH is a bit of a demagogue. He is a big demagogue and _definitely_ does not write objectively.
Rather summarize the snow than your thoughts. It will be more useful. If you want to suggest to us that you have an idea, don't. You can't even hold her! See your two posts.
PS: Somewhere you called for aplists not to start a flame, so please stick to it!
I agree with Patrick. I realized that it was an exaggeration only from the last paragraph, I thought it was a little exaggerated :D Somehow I don't know what I should take away from the article. I would like to learn the differences between WM7 and iOS, but in a more serious way than what someone read on the promo page. Some user experience, impressions and the like.
Expect a slightly higher level from Jablíčkára.
A New Year's Eve comparison, it should have come out yesterday :)
Of course, the iPhone can automatically turn off data transfers when roaming (Settings – General – Network – Data Roaming)
On the other hand, the fact that he can't search unsynchronized emails via Exchange really annoys me. Whenever I want to find something in an e-mail, and of course I don't have it in the last twenty e-mails, which are also on my mobile, I have to go to gmail via the web interface...
Synchronization with Facebook iPhone umi ;)
Actually, it is the synchronization of a contact via the Facebook app with the iOS MobileMail app... AppStore applications (I think) do not have access to MobileCal, i.e. the synchronization of FB events with iPhone Cal. it's not possible... Maybe there would be a workaround via Google Calendar, but I doubt that FB can synchronize events with Google Calendar.
iPhone tourist maps can be used by mapy.cz application
Do you happen to know of any App that does not "eat" data (I used xGPS, but I would like an alternative from the AppStore)?
For example, MotionX GPS allows you to download the necessary part of the map for offline use, or there are more Offmaps and similar software. Except that it doesn't download Google Maps (their license prohibits caching for offline use), but OpenStreetMap.
Patrik - you wrote it well!!!
This comparison file belongs to some private blog of the author rather than jablicker.
How can someone objectively compare two devices when they love one of them and have never held the other in their hands.
Another useless article unworthy of a serious server.
This entire article is of high quality and written from the beginning with one sole purpose - to highlight iOS and damage windows phone 7. As the author himself writes, he knows nothing about wp7, except what he has read on the Internet. How then can he write objectively about something like that?
I think that WP7 is a full-fledged competitor for the iPhone, and people who have tried it will surely agree with me. Everything works very smoothly and quickly, the environment is intuitive and the system is skillfully connected to FaceBook, meaning that it is constantly updated with a lot of data. At the same time, it doesn't seem like just another copy of iOS (like Android, for example) - if you look at the layout of the system, its structure, it's similar, but it's definitely not another copy.
WP7 is definitely a step forward for Microsoft compared to WM6.5, and within a year or two, when Microsoft fine-tunes the system based on user feedback, it will be very strong, high-quality and purposeful.
It was supposed to be an "exaggeration", but obviously only a few people understood the article that way :)
I am an HD7 owner and switched to it from a 3GS. At the beginning, it is a bit jarring, but after a while it is really very intuitive to work with. As I mentioned above - he went in the direction of Apple, but not the way. He does many things differently. On the other hand, in order not to brag, I have to admit that I have a number of unpleasant mistakes in the scope of labor pains. The main and incomprehensible thing is the absence of Marketplace for CR. And also the need to restart the mobile once a week.
Microsoft announced major update 7.5 for summer/autumn. No information about the functions has been announced yet and everything is just speculation :(((( Either way, I don't regret switching from iOS to WP7.
Vogle, vogle... Go to the hulanoprduv website and take a look at the review of ios and win mobile latest... what he writes there is terrible... this article is nothing compared to what he wrote about the iPhone for coming to the market, everything is amazing, everything WM and what he wrote about no now... demagogue is a weak word... that person will write an article in the second refuting everything from the first where it is 100% true...
This is a beautiful article by chance... the first iPhone was written in exactly the same way... however, it was launched on the market by a company that never had anything to do with mobile phones in its life and I think it made a big impact on sales...
I personally had the new winM in my hand and it looks like iOS with auto-linking to FB... basic functions soon...
Oh god, I'm going through this mess one more time and I won't forgive myself another comment. I'm afraid the informational value of this article is about the same as if it was written by a voracious fisherman or a 5-year-old. A LOT of things (especially technical terms) are poorly anchored.
The editor obviously has only superficial knowledge about these things, like every other fan, and thinks that he can write a quality article with a similar basis. Error. Can't. At least not for a knowledgeable audience.
I would ask for less similar articles. This was seriously the biggest disaster on the apple tree. Although I like this server and quite often read various articles here, if the apple seller should continue with this style, I will gladly exchange it for any other Apple server. I think there are quite a few of them on the Czech internet.
It's true, the alarm clock only works when you tell it to repeat.
Sharing the PC to mobile connection works with the iPhone if you have a Mac because it can create a WiFi network ;))
So my ThinkPad is also a Mac? Because he can do it himself ;)
I keep thinking about this article and another interesting feature of the new WP7 (and a theoretical advantage compared to iOS) occurred to me, and that is wireless sync. It's classic synchronization with Zune, except that it's via Wi-Fi.
It's very practical, because I have a home Wi-Fi to which I have a mobile phone and a laptop connected. All you have to do is start the Zune at home and it will take care of the rest by itself...
I, like the author of the article, have never seen WP 7, so I looked on the Internet to see what it looks like and it doesn't seem so terrible to me. It looked quite nice in the videos I saw. A snappy system and quite a nice clear environment. A fix is allegedly already being prepared for some of the errors you mention here. I found Telenav navigation. I don't understand why you compare Opera. Both systems have
your own and, in my opinion, quality browser.
It would be better, before writing such an article, to borrow a phone with WP7, test it, find out something about it, and then compare.
So I had the opportunity to "reach out" for a phone with WM7 (otherwise I use an iP4) and here are my observations:
– it's insanely fast compared to anything with WM6.5 and older
– it doesn't have registers as we used to know them!!!! but only the configuration files, in my opinion they dug it from the ground up and that's good
– Apple is not only a SW manufacturer but also a HW manufacturer, who can allow multitasking in such a way that it does not drain the battery and does not multitask, but only allows applications to save their current state before shutting down. It is small and when the RAM runs out, the application will be deleted anyway, but at least the state will remain, so the application will start again, but with the settings where it left off. WM7 doesn't have it for two reasons. 1. MS didn't make its own HW and thus it can't optimize it as it needs, but according to the SDK the possibility is there, we'll see in the future, and 2. again according to the SDK, it is possible to talk about real multitasking with WM7, nothing like in iOS, i.e. BSD. It would simply have to be redone a lot.
- access to the exchange account is also possible in WM7 for 2003 and 2000, but not everything works there and there is a problem with certificates, because it is EX 2003 and older ones cannot be distributed in the same way as 2007/10.
– GPS application support is generally bad on WM, any version, but the navigation manufacturers are to blame, not the WM manufacturer. The API is there, just use it.
– real difference between WM6.5 and older and WM7 when you are doing something and you get a call. WM will take it from you and when you hang it up, it will hang up just like an iOS device. WM 6.5, which run on a gigahertz processor, sometimes have the same problem, and that's only because the radio module was not part of the API at all and was made by the phone manufacturer himself, and when a command comes from the radio module to the OS that the call is going, AZ WM gave you time. so they let you talk, but they were doing their dirty practices in the background, so if you hung up, it took a while for the call to actually land where it should. just windows ;)
The alarm clock on the iPhone (4 and 3G) works for me too. I use it once, she uses it daily. Guys, download new firmware at least once a year (if you know what it is :).
The problems are just (and allegedly only) on the new fw 4.2.1 ;)
The article was meant to be lighthearted, if only because it was on the topic of kicking a corpse or that making fun of wp7 is terribly easy. It was more or less not about making fun of WP/iOS per se, but pointing out people who are spreading sectarianism around and damaging the good name of the brand and it doesn't matter if it's Apple, HTC, Microsoft. Many noticed the roaming error, it was put there on purpose, although I admit I could have written it differently. I'm sure there are people I've made fun of, but honestly: if one guy who reads this recognizes himself in it and thinks about himself and promises himself to do better, then I don't regret my article.
even if the article is clearly a recession, it is still a smiling rebuke of WP7 for what has so far been defended as unnecessary for the iPhone :-)
I didn't understand: Flash + Mobile device = Juiced battery in record time
is this a myth caused by apple users? multimedia (video, games) combined with a constantly active display always drain the battery more (when you add to that the constant 3G/wifi data flow) but a record time?
according to most adobe flash beta tests on Nexus one, continuous playback of flash video/playing flash games drains the battery in about 5 hours (somewhere even more)
that's a decent value when you take into account that HTC phones have about 1/4 worse endurance compared to models from e.g. Motorola, and the phone takes a while
with the final flash it is possible even better
Someone has probably already written it here, but turning off data when roaming has iOS. It is possible to synchronize it with multiple PCs, but to a limited extent. It works with up to 5 PCs, but all of them would have to have the same Library, otherwise the content of the last PC wins. Synchronization with FaceBook is not clear to me. Of course, I have the FB application on the iP and it allows to synchronize contacts with friends on FB. But it is slightly limited. Friends must understand that the phone number on FB can be given. :-D However, what more can you expect from FB synchronization?
Heh funny article. And even if there are a couple of inconsistencies, my opinion is that wp7 deserves to be mocked, because even if it is short, from one point of view it seems unfair, so functions that do not depend on third parties, such as navigation, it is logical that I am still not very I acknowledge that, but everyone with an iPhone has noticed that they don't have flash, that they don't know everything, etc. and now wp7 has arrived, which doesn't support all of this? I think that's pretty embarrassing. Because Windows certainly followed people's complaints about these flaws and didn't give them anyway. In my opinion, the only thing that's embarrassing is that everyone and not just wp7 is a monkey on the iphone or on the hw or sw side, but that these things can't be put there....you can only shake your head at that. And now I'm wondering what I'm going to write on the iPhone when Windows doesn't have the same support as the iPhone...
You forget that the features that the author trollishly writes about, such as "there's no need" "Multico?" "Satan's withdrawal" etc. iOS didn't have it either at the beginning.
Even before you got these features, you shouted everywhere that they were useless, but now they are good for you.
In my opinion, none of those functions, except maybe Copy n' paste, have any deeper meaning.
And multitasking on the phone is seriously just battery-eating beef. In particular, the "modified" multitasking is not actually multitasking.
If anyone has an "Apple hater" insult ready, just know that I have an iPhone 3GS.
It is actually a nice and helpful piece of information. I am satisfied that you shared this helpful information with us. Please keep us informed like this. Thank you for sharing.
