Samsung has introduced a trio of models of the Galaxy S22 series, which is the flagship smartphone portfolio of the brand. Since the South Korean manufacturer is the clear market leader, a direct comparison with its biggest competitor, i.e. Apple and its iPhone 13 series, is offered. As far as photographic skills are concerned, the models are quite different from each other.

The smallest Galaxy S22 model is directly opposed to the basic iPhone 13, the Galaxy S22+ model, although it offers a slightly larger display, will be compared more with the iPhone 13 Pro. The flagship Galaxy S22 Ultra is then a clear competitor for the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Bigger sensor and software magic

Compared to the previous generation, the Galaxy S22 and S22+ have sensors that are 23% larger than their predecessors, the S21 and S21+, and are equipped with Adaptive Pixel technology, thanks to which more light reaches the sensor, so that details stand out better in photos and colors shine even in the dark . At least according to Samsung. Both models are equipped with a main camera with a resolution of 50 MPx, and as is known, Apple still keeps 12 MPx. The ultra-wide camera has the same 12 MPx, but the telephoto lens of the S22 and S22+ has only 10 MPx compared to its rivals.

When shooting videos, you can now use the Auto Framing function, thanks to which the device recognizes and continuously tracks up to ten people, while automatically refocusing on them (Full HD at 30 fps). In addition, both phones feature advanced VDIS technology that minimizes vibrations – thanks to which owners can look forward to smooth and sharp recordings even while walking or from a moving vehicle.

These phones are also equipped with state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technology that takes photography and photography to the next level. Or at least according to Samsung, they are trying to. The new AI Stereo Depth Map feature makes creating portraits especially easy. People are supposed to look better in photos, and all the details in the image are clearer and sharper thanks to sophisticated algorithms. This should apply not only to people, but also to pets. This new portrait mode should reliably take care, for example, that their fur does not blend into the background.

Is it more Pro Max or Ultra?

The Super Clear Glass used in the Ultra model effectively prevents glare when filming at night and in backlight. Auto Framing and improved portraits are also present here. Of course, the extremely large zoom, enabling up to a hundred times zoom, attracts a lot of attention. The optical one is tenfold. It is a periscope lens.

Like the Galaxy S22 and S22+ models, the Galaxy S22 Ultra also offers exclusive access to the Expert RAW application, an advanced graphics program that allows advanced editing and settings almost like a professional SLR camera. Of course, this is a certain alternative to ProRAW Apple. Images can be saved here in RAW format with a depth of up to 16 bits and then edited down to the last detail. Here you can adjust the sensitivity or exposure time, change the color temperature of the image using the white balance or manually focus exactly where you need it.

Especially if we are talking about the Ultra model, Samsung did not add too many hardware innovations here compared to the previous generation. So it will depend a lot on how it can do its magic with the software, because the S21 Ultra model in the renowned test DXOMark relatively failed.
