Information has leaked to the public that negotiations are currently underway between Apple and Spotify. This is the approach of the Spotify application with the voice assistant Siri, which Apple does not currently allow. The negotiations should be the result of a long-running dispute between Apple and Spotify.

The relationship between the two companies is not ideal. Spotify accuses Apple of many things, from "unfair" practices in the App Store to Apple abusing its position against its competitors within its platform.

According to foreign information, representatives of Apple and Spotify are trying to come up with some kind of acceptable proposal, how it would be possible to use the Siri voice assistant to control the Spotify application. These are mainly common control instructions that work on Apple Music - such as playing a specific album, a mix from a given artist, or starting a selected playlist.

In iOS 13, there is a new SiriKit interface that allows developers to integrate selected voice commands into their applications and thus use Siri to extend the controllability of the application. This interface can now be used for applications working with music, podcasts, radio or audiobooks. Spotify therefore logically wants to use this new possibility.

If Apple reaches an agreement with Spotify, in practice it would mean that there will have to be an option in the operating system settings through which it will be possible to set the default application for playing music. Today, if you tell Siri to play something by Pink Floyd, Apple Music will automatically start. This will have to change in the future if SiriKit is to work as Apple says it should.
