Apple AirPlay 2 has been available to third-party developers since 2018. Spotify has also implemented this technology, which allows seamless streaming of music from devices, but there have been issues. Spotify is now one of the few major content streaming platforms that does not yet fully support this technology.

If you play audio on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 11.4 or later and a Mac running macOS Catalina or later, you can use AirPlay to stream that audio to AirPlay-compatible speakers or smart TVs. To stream audio via AirPlay 2 to multiple speakers at the same time, simply select multiple compatible speakers or smart TVs.

So this is a fairly useful content consumption feature that is definitely not new. The second generation brought multi-room audio, Siri support and improved buffering over the first. So that third-party developers can also use it, there is a freely available API, while Apple describes the integration into applications in great detail on its developer sites.

Silence on the footpath

But Spotify fumbles a bit in this. Specifically, it is dealing with issues around sound drivers. Although Apple opened up its HomePods to third-party music services last year, it's also up to them to handle this compatibility. But Spotify still hasn't added its support, or rather not so that the connection is 100% functional. So on the one hand there is the biggest player in the field of music streaming, on the other hand a company unable to solve the issue of compatibility.

At the same time, this is a relatively important function in the competitive battle against Apple Music. Of course, it is in Spotify's interest to gain control of as many devices as possible at the expense of its biggest competitor available in iPhones. However, the latest news regarding AirPlay 2 is from August 7 this year, when representatives of the network on your forum they stated: "Spotify will support Airplay 2. We will post updates as they become available." Since even after a quarter of a year there is still silence on this issue, it is probably clear to you that we are not done yet. And when it will happen, the platform developers themselves may not even know.
