In the last few years, Samsung has been relatively successful in the field of recording media, specifically in the case of memory chips and SSD drives. If you've ever built a PC in the last few years, or upgraded your current one (or just replaced the internal drive in another device), you've probably come across Samsung products. Their SSD EVO and SSD PRO product lines are both very popular and highly rated. The company also confirmed its position as a great innovator in the past days, when it presented a 2,5″ disk with the largest capacity to date.

Samsung managed to fit so many memory chips into the body of the 2,5″ SSD drive that the capacity of the drive rose to an incredible 30,7TB. Just to give you an idea - such a capacity would be enough to store around 5 movies in FHD resolution.

The new disk with the product designation PM1643 contains 32 memory modules, each of which has a capacity of 1TB, which is handled by a pair of the latest 512GB V-NAND chips. The entire system has a completely new memory controller, unique control software and 40GB DRAM. In addition to the huge capacity, the new drive also offers a significant increase in transfer speeds (compared to the last record holder, which had half the capacity and was introduced by the company two years ago).

The speeds of sequential reading and writing attack the limit of 2MB/s, respectively. 100MB/s. The random read and write speed is then 1 IOPS, or 700 IOPS. These are three to four times higher values than are usual for 400″ SSD disks. The focus of this new product is quite obvious – Samsung is aiming it at the enterprise sector and at huge data centers (however, the technology will gradually reach the ordinary consumer segment as well), which require huge capacity and very high transmission speeds. This is also related to endurance, which must correspond to a similar focus.

As part of the five-year warranty, Samsung guarantees that their new device can handle the daily recording of its maximum capacity for at least five years. The MTBF (mean time between write errors) is two million hours. The disk also includes a package of software tools that help preserve data in case of accidental shutdowns, ensure ideal durability, etc. You can find detailed technical specifications here. The entire product range will include several models, with the 30TB model standing at the top. In addition to it, the company will also prepare 15TB, 7,8TB, 3,8TB, 2TB, 960GB and 800GB variants. Prices have not yet been published, but it can be expected that companies will pay several tens of thousands of dollars for the top model.
