The macOS Monterey operating system was introduced a few months ago at the WWDC21 developer conference. We saw the official release to the public only two weeks ago. As far as news and improvements are concerned, there are a lot of them available in macOS Monterey. This year, however, many functions are available within all new operating systems, including iOS and iPadOS 15 or watchOS 8. One of these functions, which is connected across systems, is Focus. According to many individuals, this is the overall best new feature this year, and I personally can only agree. Let's take a look at 5 tips from Focus in macOS Monterey in this article.

Synchronization of modes

Focus modes have completely replaced the original Do Not Disturb mode. If you activated the original Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone, for example, it was not automatically activated on other devices. This means that Do Not Disturb had to be activated separately everywhere. But that is changing with the arrival of macOS Monterey and other new systems. If you activate a Focus mode on a Mac, for example, it is automatically activated on the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Anyway, if sync doesn't work for you, or if you'd like to change it in macOS Monterey, go to System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus, where below as needed (de)activate possibility Share across devices.

Urgent notifications

Within the Focus, you can create several different modes that you can adjust individually and independently of each other. This means that you can set for each mode, for example, who will be able to call you, or which applications will be able to send you notifications. In addition, you can also activate so-called urgent notifications for selected applications, which can "overcharge" the active Concentration mode. Urgent notifications can be (de)activated for applications in System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus, where on the left select supported application, and then tick possibility Enable push notifications. In addition, in the Focus mode, the "overcharge" must be activated, by going to System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus. Here, click on a specific mode, then click on Options at the top right and activate the Enable push notifications option.

Repeated calls and allowed calls

Compared to the original Do Not Disturb mode, which lacked many basic functions, the Focus modes offer many more options for complete reconfiguration to your own taste. But the truth is that some features from the original Do Not Disturb mode have remained part of the new Focus. Specifically, these are repeated calls and allowed calls. If you allow repeated calls, so a second call from the same caller within three minutes will not mute. This means that even through active Focus mode you will hear such a call. AT allowed calls you can generally choose which contacts will be able to call you - Everyone, All contacts and Favorite contacts are available. Of course, you can still choose the allowed contacts individually. Both repeated calls and allowed calls can be (de)activated in System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus. Choose left here specific mode, and then tap in the top right Elections.

Share your focus in Messages

If you activated Do Not Disturb mode in older versions of Apple operating systems, no one had a chance to find out about this fact. This means that someone must have tried to text you, but unfortunately they couldn't because of your active Do Not Disturb mode. But the good news is that with the arrival of Focus, we also got a new feature that makes it possible to share the state of focus in a conversation in the native Messages app. So if you have Focus mode active and the other party goes into your conversation in Messages, you'll see a message above the message text field saying that you have muted notifications. Thanks to this, the other party will immediately know why you are not answering. In urgent cases, however, it is possible to override Focus mode by sending the message and then tapping Report Anyway. If necessary, you can of course use repeated calls, which we talked about more on the previous page. If you want to (de)activate the sharing of the concentration state in Messages, go to System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus, where on the left choose specific mode and down activate Share focus state.

Automatic start mode

If you want to activate Focus mode on your Mac with macOS Monterey, you just need to click on the control center icon in the top bar, where you can then select an individual mode and activate it. But it is much better if the selected Concentration mode can activate itself, and that completely automatically. This is useful, for example, if you come to work, or if you leave home, etc. If you would like to set the automation for automatically starting the Focus mode on the Mac, just go to System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus, where on the left choose specific mode. Then at the bottom tap on the + icon and then choose whether you want to create automation based on time, place or application. Then just go through the wizard and create the automation.
