Apple has announced that it will hold the opening Keynote for WWDC24 on June 10. One of the most anticipated items of the presentation will be the new operating system for iPhones, i.e. iOS 18. But what do we already know about it?

Apple Maps

Support for custom routes should finally arrive in the Apple Maps application. It means that you simply drag the planned ones to another road and the application will guide you along it. For example, Google Maps can already do this. Apple Maps should also get topographical maps, which are especially useful for hiking and outdoor activities. You can read the contour lines, altitude, but also the location of various trails from them.

Special App Store

In iOS, we have Apple's App Store, which offers many categories of applications and games. However, with the advent of artificial intelligence, this probably won't be enough for Apple, and it is said to be planning to launch a new store that will focus only on AI applications. To some extent, these could be add-ons for the system that will draw on the new AI features of Apple devices, similar to how Safari add-ons are now. So it would not have to be only separate applications such as ChatGPT, Copilot or Wombo, etc.

Changing the order of icons on the desktop

Until now, the icons of applications and games on the iOS system desktop were composed from the upper left corner, where it was impossible to miss a place. You could only disrupt it with folders or widgets. However, with iOS 18, we should be able to create empty spaces as well. Everything will still be aligned in the grid, but it shouldn't be a problem to have only four applications in the middle of the display, etc.

RCS support

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a text protocol used by messaging apps within the Android system. By Apple adopting this standard, the message sent from the Messages application to the Android device will not arrive as an SMS but through data, as in chat applications or in the case of iMessage. Even reactions or emoticons will be displayed correctly.

Redesign

It's supposed to be the biggest iOS change we've ever seen. However, the question is whether it will be a flurry of AI features or also with a redesign in mind. It's a fact that iOS has been looking the same for many years and it's a bit boring, so some revival, such as iOS 7 brought, would definitely not hurt.

Artificial intelligence features

There has been speculation about them for quite some time, what exactly they should offer, but they are still based on guesswork. However, we can draw on competitors such as Samsung, which offers the possibility of translations, summarization, or generative editing of photos. Siri should be improved, which should get large language modules (LLM), searching in Spotlight, composing texts in Apple applications and determining their tone, etc. should also be improved.

chatbot

There has been a lot of speculation lately that iOS 18 should have its own chatbot, something like a text-based Siri. However, we shouldn't expect this, at least according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
