Acquisitions are not unusual in the world of technology and the Internet. One such acquisition occurred earlier this week, when MediaLab decided to take the image and photo sharing platform Imgur under its wing. In addition to this news, today's summary of the day will also talk about the second generation Symfonisk speaker, the sale of which will start in selected markets in the course of next month.

Second generation Symfonisk loudspeaker

Earlier this week, Sonos and Ikea officially announced the second generation of the Symfonisk tabletop speaker. There has been speculation for a while that the second generation of the popular speaker could see the light of day this year, and earlier this month even alleged leaks of its new customizable design appeared online. The new generation of the Symfonisk loudspeaker will be available from October 12 this year, both in overseas stores of the furniture brand Ikea and in selected markets in Europe. The second-generation Symfonisk speaker should reach all regions in the course of next year.

In the case of the second generation of the aforementioned speaker, Ikea wants to slightly change its sales strategy. The base, which will be available in white or black, will be sold separately, and users will also be able to purchase one of the available shades for it. The shade will be available in a frosted glass design, as well as a variant made of translucent black glass. A textile shade will also be available, which customers will be able to purchase in either black or white. Ikea will also expand compatibility with light bulbs a bit more for the second generation of Symfonisk speakers. In the case of the second generation Symfonisk speaker, the controls will be located directly on the lamp itself. The price of the base was set at $140, the glass shade will cost $39, and the textile version of the shade will cost customers $29.

Imgur is changing hands

The popular service Imgur, which is used to share image files, is changing its owner. The platform was recently bought by MediaLab, which describes itself as a "holding company for consumer internet brands". Brands and services such as Kik, Whisper, Genius or WorldStarHipHop fall under the MediaLab company. The Imgur platform currently boasts around three hundred million active users. MediaLab says that following the acquisition, it will assist the Imgur platform's core team in creating the best possible environment for community-based online entertainment.

Imgur MediaLab

The journey of the Imgur service is said to be far from over, and with the acquisition, MediaLab commits, among other things, to invest even more in its operation, according to its own words. What exactly the mentioned investment will mean for Imgur is not yet completely certain. Some fear that the acquisition was made more for the purpose of working with user data or using the Imgur platform for advertising purposes. The Imgur platform was originally supposed to serve mainly for sharing images on the discussion server Reddit, but over time, it launched its own service for hosting image files, and the use of Imgur began to decline significantly.
