A number of ATMs around the world have also been offering the possibility of contactless withdrawals for some time - all you have to do is attach a contactless payment card, smartphone or watch to the integrated NFC reader. Using this method is undoubtedly fast and very convenient, but according to security expert Josep Rodriguez, it also carries some risk. In addition to this topic, in our today's roundup we will somewhat unusually focus on the leaks of upcoming devices from Samsung.

An expert warns of the dangers of NFC at ATMs

Security expert Josep Rodriguez from IOActive warns that NFC readers, which are part of many modern ATMs and point of sale systems, represent an easy target for attacks of all kinds. According to Rodriguez, these readers are susceptible to a number of problems, including misuse by nearby NFC devices, such as ransomware attacks or even hacking to steal payment card information. According to Rodriguez, it is even possible to abuse these NFC readers so that attackers can use them to get cash from an ATM. According to Rodriguez, carrying out a number of actions that can be used with these readers is relatively easy - allegedly all you have to do is wave a smartphone with specific software installed at the reader, which Rodriguez also demonstrated at one of the ATMs in Madrid. Some NFC readers do not verify the amount of data they receive in any way, which means that it is relatively easy for attackers to overload their memory with a specific type of attack. The number of active NFC readers around the world is really huge, which makes it much more difficult to subsequently correct any errors. And it should be noted that the range of NFC readers does not even receive regular security patches.
