It is already virtually certain that the much-feared acquisition of the popular Discord platform by Microsoft will not happen after all. Instead, Discord has decided to acquire Sentropy, with the aim of providing a more secure and friendly environment on Discord's servers. In addition to this acquisition, today's roundup will also talk about Google, this time in connection with the imminent end of the Google Hangouts communication service.

Google Hangouts is coming to an end

The fact that Google plans to put its classic Hangouts service on ice has been talked about with almost certainty since 2018. Google has increasingly started promoting its Google Chat (formerly known as Hangouts Chat) as an alternative to Hangouts and is slowly but surely preparing all users for the future transition from Hangouts to the aforementioned Chat, either in the environment of a separate application or as part of the Workspace platform for individual users. Old messages from the original Hangouts service will of course remain. Now it looks like the definitive end of Google Hangouts is indeed in sight. This is evidenced by a recent discovery in version 39 of the Google Hangouts app for Android, which should soon start showing notifications that it's time to switch to Google Chat.

See what Google Workspace looks like:

Google Hangouts is about to display a message that the service is coming to an end and that all Hangouts conversations are fully ready to migrate to Google Chat. The mentioned messages have not yet appeared in the current versions of the Google Hangouts application for iOS devices or for devices with the Android operating system, but everything indicates that they should start appearing to users as soon as possible. As such, the transition shouldn't be particularly difficult, and users certainly won't lose any of their conversations.

Discord bought out Sentropy

Not so long ago, there were reports on the Internet about the possible acquisition of the Discord platform by Microsoft. Now it appears that Discord is most likely not only unwilling to be bought by Microsoft, but also making acquisitions of its own. Specifically, this is the acquisition of a company called Sentropy, which, among other things, deals with the detection of online harassment. This detection takes place with the help of artificial intelligence technologies. Sentropy, for example, conducts online monitoring of various networks in order to detect the occurrence of possible harassment and abuse, and also offers users the option of blocking problematic people or filtering messages they do not wish to see.

Among the first consumer products from Sentropy's workshop was a tool called Sentropy Protect, which was originally aimed at helping users clean up their Twitter feed. In addition to this product, the Sentropy company has, for example, developed a number of tools designed for the needs of various companies and institutions, while these tools are also used for moderation purposes. Sentropy is currently shutting down its independent tools and joining the Discord platform. The plan here is to help expand and develop features that help keep local chat safe and trustworthy. The Discord platform is especially popular among gamers, but it is used by users from many other areas. Discord currently boasts over 150 million monthly active users. Understandably, the more popular Discord's user base grows, the harder it is to control all servers and user speech. This page is currently maintained by both Discord employees themselves and a large number of volunteers.
