Sonos announced today that it is preparing to release a new generation of its operating system and companion app. The operating system, called Sonos S2, will arrive sometime in June, along with the Sonos app. However, for owners of some (especially older) products, this may indicate a minor problem.

With this announcement, Sonos is responding to years-old complaints from users who have long complained about the outdated and very limiting operating system. Not much is known about the news yet, but what is known is very pleasing. The Sonos S2 operating system will be able to work with better source material (above the current 16bit/48kHz) for music files, and will also offer expanded connectivity options. Through the accompanying application, it will be possible to group individual (supported) products into separate groups, and newly selected Sonos products will also be able to support the Dolby Atmos or DTS:X standard.

All new Sonos products that customers buy from May this year will already include the new Sonos S2 operating system. Older products that will be compatible with the new operating system will then download it as soon as it is released. However, not all older Sonos products are compatible with the Sonos S2. And that can make life complicated for users.

Old devices that stay with the original operating system will work exclusively with the original app (which is renamed Sonos S1). Connecting them to newer products that already include Sonos S2 and will be controlled using the new "Sonos" App will not be possible. Users will thus be forced to either replace old and unsupported products with new ones, or (in case of ownership of S1 and S2 compatible products) use two separate platforms for their control, with the fact that the length of support for S1 products is not declared in any way. Products not compatible with the Sonos S2 operating system include:

  • Sonos Bridge
  • Sonos Connect and Sonos Connect:Amp
  • Sonos CR200 remote control
  • Sonos Play:5 (first generation)
  • Sonos Zone Player ZP80, ZP90, ZP100 and ZP120

In connection with the above, Sonos is launching a special Trade-in event, in which it is possible to get a small discount for the purchase of new products for old products. However, the Czech representation does not have information about this event on its website and v official conditions The Czech Republic, as a country where this campaign is available, does not appear.
