The Snapchat application received an update today, which will especially please iPhone X owners. Special filters are now available, thanks to which you can create a great and very realistic face mask. The exclusivity of this function for iPhone X is due to the presence of the TrueDepth camera, thanks to which the new masks can look so real and natural.

The new masks are themed around different carnivals, be it Day of the Dead or Mardi Gras. The photos clearly show the difference between the classic filters (or masks) that everyone can use on Snapchat, and those specially adapted for iPhone X. Thanks to the presence of the TrueDepth system, the application of masks on the user's face is very precise and the result looks believable .

Before applying the mask, the TrueDepth system scans the user's face, based on this data it creates a three-dimensional image on which it then applies a layer of the selected mask. Thanks to this, the resulting image looks quite realistic, as the masks used copy the shape of the face and are modified to fit "tailored". The fact that the new masks react precisely to the ambient lighting also adds to the realism of the entire design.

Together with the application of masks, there will also be a partial bokeh effect (blurring of the background), which makes the photographed face even more prominent. Snapchat is thus one of the first applications that uses the capabilities of the TrueDepth system. However, their development is certainly not easy, as Apple is very restrictive in the extent to which it allows third-party developers to use the system. Basically, they are only allowed to use the 3D mapping functions, the others are forbidden to them (due to concerns about the security and private data of users).
