As soon as Apple during yesterday evening started selling the Smart Battery Case for iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, many iPhone X owners started to wonder if the new accessory is also compatible with their phones. At first glance, the answer would be that most likely yes - after all, the iPhone XS and X have essentially the same dimensions (almost the only difference is the slightly larger and shifted camera lens). In the end, however, the situation is different, and the problem does not lie in the dimensions, but in Apple itself.

Even in the description of the charging case for the iPhone XS, there is not a single mention of compatibility with the older iPhone X. René Ritchie, the editor of the foreign magazine iMore, therefore bought a Battery Case today and tried it with the iPhone X. The case fits last year's model quite well, there is no problem even with a slightly larger camera, only the vents for the speaker and microphone are not in the exact plane. However, the problem is in the compatibility itself, when after connecting to the phone, an error message appears on the display that the accessory does not support the device being used.

In the end, the obstacle is not the slightly different dimensions, but directly Apple or protection he implemented into iOS. After putting the case on the iPhone X, the phone simply does not charge. It is at least strange that Apple is not able to offer a rechargeable case for its premium model from last year, which cost users at least 30 crowns, and when it introduces one, it is blocked by software. It's likely that the incompatibility is due to as yet unknown issues, but it could also be another way to force customers to upgrade to the latest model.

Update: The iPhone X compatibility situation appears to be more complicated than first thought. For some users, the Smart Battery Case with the previous year's model works, but either a restart or a system restore is required. Others were helped by the update to the beta version of iOS 12.1.3, which, on the other hand, does not (probably yet) support the iPhone XS Max version of the cover.
