When Apple introduced the redesigned and long-awaited 14″/16″ MacBook Pro (2021) late last year, it managed to appeal to a lot of people. The new model was based not only on the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, but on a number of other changes, while the overall design was also changed. Newly, these laptops are slightly thicker, but on the other hand, they offer popular connectors such as HDMI, MagSafe and an SD card slot. To make matters worse, the screen has also undergone an evolution. The new MacBook Pro (2021) offers a so-called Liquid Retina XDR display with Mini LED backlighting and ProMotion technology, or with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

This model undoubtedly set a new trend and showed the world that Apple is not afraid to admit its past mistakes and take them back. This of course raises a lot of questions. Thanks to the current transition from Intel processors to Apple's own Silicon solution, Apple fans are watching the arrival of each new Mac with much greater interest, which is why the Apple community is now focusing on some of them. A frequent topic is the MacBook Air with the M2 chip, which theoretically could draw some ideas from the aforementioned Proček.

MacBook Air with 120Hz display

So the question arises whether it wouldn't be good if Apple didn't copy most of the new features from the MacBook Pro (2021) for the expected MacBook Air. Although it sounds perfect and changes for the better would certainly not be harmful, it is necessary to look at it from a slightly different angle. The better the technology, the more expensive it is at the same time, which would unfortunately have a negative effect on the price of the device itself. In addition, the Air model functions as a gateway to the world of Apple portable computers, which is why its price simply cannot increase too much. And with similar changes, it would definitely increase.

But the price is not the only reason not to engage in similar events. Yet. Of course, as technology advances, it is also possible that the Liquid Retina XDR will become a kind of basic possible display. Again, it is necessary to think about which users Apple is targeting with its Air. As already indicated above, the MacBook Air is intended for undemanding users who are dedicated to office work and from time to time get bogged down in more complex tasks. In that case, this laptop is one of the best solutions. It offers sufficient performance, a long battery life, and at the same time a low weight.

Therefore, Apple does not even need to bring such excellent improvements in these areas, as users will simply do without them. It is necessary to think about how, for example, replacing the display with a better one would affect the price of the device itself. When we then add more and more news to that, it is obvious that such changes would not make sense for the time being. Instead, Apple is turning its attention to other segments. Battery life in combination with performance is key for a given target, which the current model does excellently.

Will Air see similar changes?

Technology is moving forward at a rocket pace, thanks to which we have better and better devices available today. Consider, for example, the 2017 MacBook Air, which is not even a 5-year-old machine. If we compare it to today's Air with the M1, we will see huge differences. While the laptop at the time only offered an old display with large frames and a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels and only a dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, today we have a powerful piece with its own M1 chip, a stunning Retina display, Thunderbolt connectors and many other benefits. That is why it can be expected that one day the time will come when, for example, the MacBook Air will also have a Mini LED display with ProMotion technology.
