On Mac and MacBook, the Dock is something that each of us uses several times a day. It is with the help of the Dock that we can get to where we need to be. Whether it's Illustrator to create a new logo, Safari to check Facebook, or Spotify to play our favorite album. The Dock is of course customizable, we can shuffle, create, delete and change icons in it. But today we're going to take a look at one cool feature that will take your Dock experience to another level. The trick is that you can add spaces to the Dock to separate apps or groups of apps from each other.

How to spaces in the Dock

They exist two spaces you can add to the Dock. There is one smaller and the other is Vetsi – we'll show you how to add them both. All you need for this trick is a macOS device. No third party app is needed as it does all the work for us Terminal.

  • V click in the upper right corner in the top bar on Lupu for activation Spotlight
  • We write in the text field Terminal
  • Confirm with the key Enter
  • Terminal you can also find it in the folder Utility, which is located in Launchpad
  • After you open Terminal, just copy one of the commands below
  • The first command is for inserting a small space, the second one is for inserting a larger space

Smaller gap

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="small-spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock

A bigger gap

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock

Difference between small gap and big gap:

macos_spaces_separate
  • After that, just confirm the command with the Enter key
  • Screen flashes, Dock se will reset and joins it gap
  • The space bar behaves like any other app icon, so you can move it around or remove it from the Dock

The Dock looks more professional and clear after using these spaces. You can consider using spaces, for example, when you want to separate a certain application or a group of applications from others. Spaces can also be used when you accidentally click on a different application than you want out of habit.
