More than ten years ago some information indicated that Apple was developing a more affordable alternative to the iPhone 4. At the time, it was dubbed the iPhone nano. Of course, nothing of the sort happened, but newly discovered emails that came to light as part of Apple's legal battle with Epic Games confirmed that the company was indeed looking into the matter.

As the magazine noted The Verge, an email included in the Epic vs. Apple consists of an executive team meeting program. The meeting was supposed to focus on the company's strategy for 2011 and recap the previous year. This includes the "holy war with Google", but also that 2011 was supposed to be the "year of the cloud", and the emerging "Post PC" era was also to be discussed.

For 2011, Jobs referred to the iPhone 4s with many of its improvements, such as the camera, antenna design, or processor. However, Jobs also suggested that Apple create a low-cost iPhone model based on the iPod touch to replace the iPhone 3GS. He also created the so-called "iPhone nano plan", in which he mentions his cost goals, while mentioning Jony Ivo with the design of the device. The email is from October 2010.

Evidence emails in Epic vs. Apple has revealed various mysterious products, the concept of which Apple never developed further. For example, in June of this year 9to5Mac magazine reported on emails from Steve Jobs, which also referred to the iPod Super nano or the unreleased iPod shuffle from 2008. But it is interesting to see that Apple has been dealing with the "cheap" iPhone for quite some time. We could only see its first appearance with the iPhone 5c, which was introduced at the same time as the iPhone 5s. Then, of course, there was the iPhone SE, in a way also the iPhone XR, and currently the 2nd generation SE.
