We change the sound level or brightness not only on our Mac or MacBook several times a day. This is, of course, a completely simple act that none of us think about. You can change the sound or brightness simply by pressing the appropriate button on the keyboard, in the upper row of function keys, but you can also find the option to change the sound or brightness in System Preferences, or in the top bar of your device. On the iPhone or iPad, the volume can then be changed with the side buttons or within the notification center, where you can also find the brightness slider. But did you know that there are hidden options within macOS that allow you to change the sound level or brightness in other ways? Let's look at them together.

Changing the volume or brightness in smaller parts

If you decide to change the volume on your Mac or MacBook using the function keys on the keyboard, a small square will appear on the display to inform you of the level. Specifically, you can change the sound or volume within the frame 16 levels. But you've probably already found yourself in a situation where you were listening to music or watching a movie and you couldn't set the right sound level (or brightness). When you pressed the volume down button, the sound was very quiet, when you turned the volume up again, the volume was high. You couldn't make compromises in this case, so you just had to adapt. But did you know that the 16 parts, i.e. levels, intended for adjusting the volume or brightness, can be expanded to a total of 64?

You definitely want to find out how to do it in this case. There is no need to activate anything or make any changes in the system - it is a completely simple operation that is only hidden in a way. If you want to change the volume or brightness level in more detail, i.e. if you want 16 levels to appear instead of 64 levels, then the procedure is as follows. First it is necessary that you on the keyboard held at the same time keys Shift + Option (Alt). After these keys you will hold, so it is enough that you they pressed the button to increase/decrease volume/brightness. This function is also available for setting the brightness of the keyboard backlight The square that informs you on the screen about changing the volume or brightness level is divided into 64 levels, instead of 16. Now it will no longer happen that you cannot choose the right volume or brightness level brightness when listening to music or watching a movie.

Sound when changing volume

If you change it using the function keys on the keyboard on your Mac or MacBook, only the above-mentioned square will appear, in which you can easily monitor the volume level. But the truth is that this square won't tell you much - if you don't have any music or a movie playing, you only have to guess how loud they will be. However, there is a simple trick with which you can play the sound response when you change the volume. This means that when you change the volume, a short sound will play to let you know what volume you have set. If you want to play the sound while changing its level, just hold the button Shift, and then started on the keyboard press keys to change the volume. After each volume change, the previously mentioned short sound is played to let you know what volume you have set.

You can even have the above-mentioned function, i.e. playback of sound when its level is changed, activated. This means you won't have to hold down Shift when you activate this feature, and the audio response will simply always play when you change the volume. If you want to activate this function, on your Mac or MacBook, click on the top left icon , and then select an option from the menu that appears System Preferences… In the new window, just move to the section with the name Sound, where in the top menu make sure that you are in the tab Sound effects. Now only the lower part of the window is enough tick possibility Play response when volume changes.
