Shazam has been basking in the media spotlight for the past week. Friday before last information appeared on the website that Apple wanted to buy it, and four days later it was a confirmed thing. Last Tuesday, Apple released an official statement confirming the acquisition of Shazam. Formally, it now belongs to Apple and just a few days after the change of owner, it came out with a major update for its iOS application. It brings, somewhat surprisingly, the so-called "offline mode", which allows the application to work even if the default device is not connected to the Internet. However, there is one catch.

If you have Shazam, this is update 11.6.0. Apart from the new offline mode, the update does not bring anything else. Unfortunately, the new offline mode does not bring the ability to recognize the song being played without the need for an Internet connection, which would be basically impossible to do. However, as part of the new offline mode, you can record an unknown song, the application will save the recording and try to identify it as soon as an Internet connection is available. As soon as it recognizes the recorded song, you will see a notification about the successful performance. The official statement from the developers reads as follows:

From now on, you can use Shazam even when you're offline! When listening to music, you no longer need to be online to find out what's playing. Even if you are without an internet connection, simply tap the blue button as you normally do. As soon as you are connected to the Internet again, the application will immediately let you know about the search results. Even if you don't have Shazam open.

It's still not clear (and probably won't be some Friday) what Apple actually intends with this acquisition. Shazam's services are integrated into Siri, for example, just as the application is available on basically all Apple devices.
