Recently, Apple has been attracting attention with its Self Service Repair program. It was first revealed via a press release in late 2021, while its hard launch didn't happen until May 2022. However, one important piece of information needs to be mentioned. The program first started in the United States. Now it has finally received an important expansion - it has headed to Europe. So even our neighbors in Germany or Poland can use its possibilities.

With the launch of the program, Apple surprised practically the whole world. Until recently, he pioneered a diametrically different procedure and tried to make home repairs rather unpleasant for users. For example, even when simply replacing the iPhone's battery, an annoying notification that a non-original part was used was subsequently displayed. There was no way to prevent this. The original parts were not officially sold, which is why apple makers had no other option but to reach for the so-called secondary production. At first glance, it sounds great. But there is also a rather strange question mark hanging over Self Service Repair. It doesn't really make sense to choose the devices to which the program applies.

You only repair newer iPhones

But the relatively new Self Service Repair program does not apply to all devices. Although Apple presents that the service is designed to fix the most common problems and currently offers spare parts along with manuals for Apple phones iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone SE 3 (2022). Soon after, we got an extension covering Macs with M1 chips. In the end, it is definitely good that Apple owners have access to original parts and official repair instructions, which can be seen as an unquestionable step forward.

But what the fans don't fully understand is the support for the mentioned devices. As we mentioned above, according to Apple, the program is aimed at home repairs of the most common problems. But here we encounter a slightly absurd problem. It all boils down to the fact that the entire service (for now) only focuses on newer products. On the contrary, what is the most common in such a case - replacing the battery in an older iPhone - in such a case, Apple will not help in any way. In addition, the offer has not changed in practically a year and there are still only three listed iPhones. The Cupertino giant has not commented on this fact in any way, and therefore it is not even clear what the reason for this actually is.

Therefore, there are various speculations among apple growers. For example, there is a theory that Apple is not ready to support older devices for a fairly simple reason. Having spent years fighting home repairs, on the other hand, it can't react as quickly, which is why we have to settle for only newer generations. But it is also possible that he simply has more parts for the newer series and is able to resell them in this way, or that he is trying to take advantage of the situation. For older models, we can find a number of quality parts from so-called secondary production.

Support for older devices

It is therefore a question of how Apple will approach this "lack" in the final. However, as we mentioned above, the giant did not comment on the whole situation. Therefore, we can only assume and estimate the following course of action. Generally, however, two versions are used. Either we will see support for older generations later, or Apple will skip them entirely and start building the program on the foundations laid, starting with the iPhones 12, 13 and SE 3.
