Samsung held its Galaxy Unpacked event last week, where it showed off a trio of Galaxy S24 series phones. But before he got to them, he first talked about Galaxy AI, i.e. his artificial intelligence, which is available in these devices and will later be extended to older and logically newer smartphones and tablets. But is it really such a gem?

Galaxy AI is a collection of artificial intelligence features that bring a whole host of new capabilities to the Galaxy S24 range – some processed locally, some in the cloud. In photography, it helps you to play with the objects present, you can also adjust the horizon level in the photo and instead of cropping, use generative artificial intelligence to fill the image with the appropriate details without shrinking the photo or removing some elements from the shot.

Then there's the ability to turn any video into a slow motion 120fps video. The artificial intelligence here interpolates the missing frames regardless of how the source video was taken or what camera it was taken with. Samsung's close collaboration with Google also brought an interesting Circle to Search with Google feature to the Galaxy S24 series. You simply circle what you want to know more about on the display and you will get a result about it. But this won't be an exclusive feature. Google will give it at least to its Pixels, probably directly to Android and then to everyone else.

There's also support for live two-way translation of phone calls, the Samsung keyboard lets you translate texts into other languages, create message suggestions that better match the tone, and even the ability to take live transcriptions in a voice recording app. Then there's the smart summary in Samsung Notes and much more.

Why artificial intelligence?

Already with the Pixel 8, Google realized that we are facing a certain stagnation in the smartphone segment. Any hardware improvements are minor rather than major, and fewer rather than more useful features have been added with respect to normal system functions. That's what AI is changing. That's why Samsung is now following it and bringing other options for how AI can be used in smartphones in a way other than in the form of a chatbot (ChatGPT) or by creating some images based on the input text definition.

We heard a lot about AI last year, but it was probably just a harbinger of what's to come this year. So this year we would have the advantages of this technology in more common activities and mutual communication. And yes, Apple tends to be late to parties, but that's not to blame. In the beginning, only formalities usually take place and there is a warm-up for the "main party time".

The entire ecosystem vs. one platform

We've already had a chance to try out Samsung's AI, and yes, it's nice, quite intuitive, and functional in some respects. For each description of the individual options, however, you will read that Samsung does not promise or guarantee the accuracy, completeness or reliability of the work of artificial intelligence. She still has her reserves when she doesn't always have to work as expected. Texts (even in Czech) are usually successful, but images are worse.

Some Galaxy AI features also rely on Google's Gemini base models. It's safe to say that much of the benefit users will get from Galaxy AI will be due to the joint efforts of Samsung and Google. So there are two here, Apple is only one and someone has to be the first. Apple left this position to other savages of the market, with the fact that it will of course handle everything in its own way, i.e. the way we are used to from it.

So there is no need to be in a hurry. Apple certainly won't leave all the AI glory to Samsung and Google alone. It will certainly be interesting to watch the integration of its AI functions, moreover, it is almost 100% that it will not only be in its iPhones, but across the entire ecosystem, and that makes it harder to debug everything. We will certainly find out what it will look like in June at WWDC24.
