Recently, more and more Apple users are pointing out the shortcomings of the native Safari browser. Although it is a great and simple solution that boasts a minimalist design and a number of important security functions, some users are still looking for alternatives. A rather interesting one appeared on the Reddit social network, specifically on the r/mac subreddit poll, which asks what browser Apple users are using on their Macs in May 2022. A total of 5,3 thousand people took part in the survey, which gives us quite interesting results.

From the results, it is evident at first glance that, despite the mentioned criticism, Safari is still on the front row. The browser undoubtedly received the most votes, namely 2,7 thousand, thereby significantly surpassing all the competition. In second place we find Google Chrome with 1,5 thousand votes, Firefox in third place with 579 votes, Brave in fourth place with 308 votes and Microsoft Edge in fifth place with 164 votes. 104 respondents also stated that they use a completely different browser. But why are they actually looking for alternatives and what are they dissatisfied with Safari?

Why are Apple users turning away from Safari?

So let's finally move on to the essentials. Why do apple users turn away from the native solution at all and look for suitable alternatives. Many respondents said Edge is winning for them lately. It's just as good (in terms of speed and options) as Chrome without consuming as much power. A frequently mentioned plus is also the possibility of switching between user profiles. We must also not forget to mention the low battery mode, which is part of the Edge browser and takes care of putting tabs that are currently inactive to sleep. Some people also spoke in favor of Firefox for several reasons. For example, they may try to avoid browsers on Chromium, or they may be comfortable working with developer tools.

But let's now take a look at the second largest group – Chrome users. Many of them build on the same foundation. Although they are relatively satisfied with the Safari browser, when they like its speed, minimalism and security features such as Private Relay, they still cannot deny the annoying shortcomings when, for example, a website cannot be rendered correctly. For this reason, a relatively large number of Apple users switched to competition in the form of Google Chrome, i.e. Brave. These browsers can be faster in many ways, they have a huge library of extensions.

Will Apple learn from Safari's shortcomings?

Of course, it would be best if Apple learned from its shortcomings and improved the native Safari browser accordingly. But whether we will see any changes in the near future is understandably unclear. On the other hand, the developer conference WWDC 2022 takes place next month, during which Apple annually reveals new operating systems. Since the native browser is part of these systems, it is clear that if any changes await us, we will soon learn about them.
