The security of Apple products is often highlighted above the competition, mainly thanks to methods such as Touch ID and Face ID. In the case of Apple phones (and iPad Pro), the Cupertino giant relies precisely on Face ID, a system designed for facial recognition based on its 3D scan. As for Touch ID, or the fingerprint reader, it used to feature in iPhones, but today it is only offered by the SE model, iPads and especially Macs.

As for both of these methods, Apple is quite fond of them and is careful about where they introduce them at all. After all, that is precisely why they have always been part of the device in question and have not been transferred anywhere else. This specifically applies to Macs of recent years, i.e. MacBooks, whose power button serves as Touch ID. But what about models that are not laptops and therefore do not have their own keyboard? That's exactly how you were unlucky until recently. However, Apple relatively recently broke this unwritten taboo and brought Touch ID outside the Mac as well - it introduced the newer wireless Magic Keyboard with an integrated Touch ID fingerprint reader. Although there is a minor catch, it can be largely overlooked. This novelty only works with Apple Silicon Macy for security.

Will we see Face ID outside the iPhone and iPad?

If something similar happened in the case of Touch ID, where it was unclear for a long time whether it would see any change and reach traditional Macs, why couldn't Apple do something similar in the case of Face ID? These are exactly the questions that are starting to spread among apple lovers, and thus the first thoughts about which direction Apple could take are emerging. An interesting option would be the development of an external webcam with decent quality, which would also support facial recognition based on its 3D scan.

On the other hand, it is necessary to realize that such a product might not have such a large market. Most Macs have their own webcam, as does the new Studio Display monitor. In this regard, however, we have to narrow our eyes a bit, because the older FaceTime HD camera with a resolution of 720p does not bring any glory. But we still have, for example, Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro, which are classic computers without a display, for which something similar could come in handy. Of course, the question remains, if an external webcam with Face ID really came out, what would its real quality be and especially the price, or whether it would be worth it compared to the competition. In theory, Apple could come up with a great accessory for streamers, for example.

Currently, however, Apple is probably not considering a similar device. There are currently no speculations or leaks about an external camera, i.e. Face ID in a different form. Rather, it gives us an interesting thought. Since a similar change has already occurred in the case of Macs and Touch ID, theoretically we might not be so far away from interesting changes in the area of Face ID as well. For now, we will have to make do with this biometric method of authentication on iPhones and iPad Pros.
