Last year's iPhone models – specifically the XS product line – offer significantly faster data transfer via the 4G network than their predecessors. iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are nearly 26% faster in this regard than all other iPhones released between 2015 and 2017. According to the company's test results OpenSignal the XS series surpassed even the iPhone X in data transfer speed via the 4G network.

OpenSignal tested the phones in the United States with several different carriers between October 26 of last year and January 24 of this year. The iPhone XS Max scored the best with a transfer speed of up to 21,7Mbps, while the iPhone XS reached a speed of up to 20,5Mbps. The only one of last year's models that performed worse than last year's iPhone X (18,5 Mbps) was the iPhone XR with its 17,6 Mbps. Unlike the XS with 4×4 MIMO, this model only supports 2×2 MIMO.

According to OpenSignal, bandwidth hasn't changed significantly from the iPhone 6s to the iPhone X, which may have led to many interested users refusing to upgrade. The first phones with support for 5G networks are slowly coming to the world, but the adoption of this technology by Apple is estimated for 2020 at the earliest. Among other factors, this decision may be related to the fact that the company Intel, whose chips Apple buys, is preparing the first 5G components up to next year.

Apple has faced criticism in the past for being slow to adopt new technologies. The company itself often explains this phenomenon by saying that it prefers to wait until the novelty is fully accepted and adapted.
