It's only been a year since Apple showed the world its AirTag. He introduced it on April 20 and it went on the market on April 30, 2021. Thanks to its connection to the Najít network, it was certainly a revolutionary device, also considering the price. It should have been a hit, but its potential remains untapped even today. It is mainly talked about in connection with tracking people.

At Apple, we're kind of used to the fact that its products are expensive. AirTag deviates, however, because even if you can find various localizers on the market at a price of several hundred crowns, the direct competition in the form of the smart pendant Galaxy SmartTag costs the same, i.e. 890 CZK per piece, the Galaxy SmartTag+ model even costs 1 CZK. So if you don't count cables, adapters and similar accessories, AirTag is actually the company's cheapest product.

It is the price that should also make AirTag a blockbuster, because the owner of an Apple device will not find a better alternative for tracking things. But many people now see AirTag more as an object to track people than things. Numerous mediatized cases are to blame for this, and that is definitely a shame. But why else talk about AirTag at all when it simply does what it's intended for - whether it's tracking luggage, a wallet, a bike or a person.

However, AirTag was not only talked about with regard to tracking, but also in connection with its scratch-prone surface finish, unnecessarily large thickness, which limits its carrying in a wallet, and also with too expensive original accessories. Thanks to the absence of an eye, you cannot attach it to anything separately.

Upcoming news

But Apple doesn't give up on AirTag completely. After all, he is trying to tune it a little, because at the beginning of his journey he himself did not know how to set it up ideally. Among the planned news to come before the end of the year, for example, is a sound-synchronized notification, meaning that the AirTag will automatically emit a sound to alert you of its presence, while a notification will also be displayed on your device. Furthermore, exact search even with an unknown AirTag, or he wants to adjust the sequence of sounds to use more of the louder ones and locate the AirTag even easier.

The extension hangs

Perhaps Apple itself promised more, but not so much from AirTag as from the Find network. Only a handful of manufacturers use its capabilities, and even after a year, no one is flocking to this platform. So, if someone thought that Apple made a mistake by opening the platform to others, it actually turned out that the wolf got eaten (the antitrust authorities), but the goat really remained whole (Apple).

So I can't hide a slight disappointment. Personally, I consider the openness and capabilities of the Find platform to be the greatest thing that Apple has shown us in the past year. It was something that hadn't been here before and something that could really be built on. Maybe that year is just too short a time for comprehensive integration into the lives of ordinary mortals, but maybe the manufacturers themselves (and maybe even Apple) don't know how to use such a thrown glove.
