If you have a family created in the apple ecosystem, you should also use family sharing. If you have it active and set up correctly, you can easily share all purchases of applications and subscriptions, together with iCloud, etc., within the family, thanks to which you can save a lot of money. Family sharing can be used together with up to five other users, which is quite sufficient for a typical Czech family. In the latest macOS Ventura, we received several gadgets that will make using family sharing even more pleasant - let's take a look at 5 of them.

Quick access

In older versions of macOS, if you wanted to move to the family sharing section, it was necessary to open the system preferences, where you had to go to the iCloud settings and then to family sharing. However, in macOS Ventura, Apple has decided to significantly simplify access to Family Sharing, so you can access it much faster and more directly. Just go to  → System Settings, where just click on under your name in the left menu Rodina.

Creating a child account

Nowadays, even children own smart devices and often understand them more than their parents. Even so, children can be easy targets for various scammers and attackers, so parents should be in control of what their children are doing on the iPhone and other devices. A child account can help them with this, thanks to which parents get access to various functions for restricting content, setting limits on the use of applications, etc. If you would like to create a new child account on Mac, just go to  → System Settings → Family, where then on the right click on Add Member… Then just tap on Create a child account and go through the wizard.

Managing users and their information

As I mentioned in the introduction, you can invite up to five other people to family sharing, so it can be used with six users altogether. As part of family sharing, if necessary, you can also have information about the participants displayed and, if necessary, also manage them in different ways. To view family sharing participants, go to  → System Settings → Family, where are you? a list of all members will be displayed. If you would like to manage any of them, that's enough click on it. Subsequently, you can, for example, view information about Apple ID, set up sharing of subscriptions, purchases and location, and choose parent/guardian status, etc.

Easy limit extension

On one of the previous pages, I mentioned that parents can (and should) create a special child account for their children, through which they gain some control over the child's iPhone or other device. One of the features that parents can use is setting a usage limit for individual apps or categories of apps. If the child uses up this usage limit, he/she will subsequently be prevented from further usage. Sometimes, however, a parent can make this decision for a child extend the limit, which can now be done either through the Messages application or directly from the notification in case the child asks for it.

Location sharing

Family Sharing participants can share their location with each other, which can come in handy in countless situations. What's great is that family sharing also shares the location of all devices within the family, so if they're forgotten or stolen, the situation can be resolved quickly. However, some users may not be comfortable with location sharing, so it can be turned off in Family Sharing. Alternatively, you can also set it so that location sharing is not automatically turned on for new members. If you would like to set up this feature, just go to  → System Settings → Family, where you open the section below Location sharing.
