The basic idea behind activating Family Sharing is to give other household members access to Apple services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade or iCloud storage. iTunes or App Store purchases can also be shared. The principle is that one pays and everyone else uses the product. With Family Sharing, you can share one iCloud storage plan with up to five other family members. If you consider it important that everyone in your family has enough iCloud storage for their photos, videos, files, and iCloud backups, you can opt for two tiers. With Family Sharing, your family can share one 200GB or 2TB storage plan, so there's enough space for everyone.

When you share a storage plan, your photos and documents stay private, and everyone with iCloud continues to use their own accounts – just like if they had their own plan. The only difference is that you share iCloud space with other family members and manage only one plan. The advantage is also that someone is less demanding and someone who does not share tariffs would not use it in the same way as another.

iCloud storage tariff and sharing it with an existing family plan

If you already use Family Sharing, you can turn on shared storage for all family members in Settings or System Preferences.

On iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

  • Go to Settings –> your name.
  • Tap Family Sharing.
  • Tap iCloud Storage.
  • You can use the following procedure to share your existing tariff, or switch to a 200GB or 2TB tariff.
  • Use Messages to let all family members who are already on their own storage plan know that they can now switch to your shared plan.

On a Mac

  • If necessary, upgrade to a 200GB or 2TB storage plan.
  • Choose Apple menu  –> System Preferences and click Family Sharing.
  • Click iCloud Storage.
  • Click Share.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen.

Creating a new family group and sharing a storage plan

Not using Family Sharing yet? No problem. iCloud storage sharing can be turned on when you initially set up Family Sharing.

On iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

  • Go to Settings –> your name.
  • Tap Set up family sharing, then tap Get started.
  • Choose iCloud Storage as the first feature you want to share with your family.
  • If necessary, upgrade to a 200GB or 2TB storage plan.
  • When prompted, use Messages to invite up to five other people to join your family and share your storage plan.

On a Mac

  • Choose Apple menu  –> System Preferences and click Family Sharing.
  • Click iCloud Storage.
  • Click Share.

When you already have an iCloud storage plan

Once you start sharing iCloud storage, all family members using the free 5GB plan will be automatically included in your family plan. When a family member is already paying for their own iCloud storage plan, they can switch to your plan, or keep their plan and still be a family member. When he switches to a shared family plan, the unused amount of his personal plan will be refunded. Personal and shared family plans cannot be used at the same time.

To switch to a shared family plan on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch:

  • Go to Settings –> your name.
  • Tap Family Sharing, then tap iCloud Storage.
  • Tap Use family storage.

To switch to a shared family plan on Mac:

  • Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences and click Family Sharing.
  • Click iCloud Storage.
  • Click Use family storage.

When you leave a family that shares an iCloud storage plan and use more than 5GB of storage, you can continue to use iCloud storage by purchasing your own plan. If you choose not to purchase a custom plan, and if the content stored on iCloud exceeds the capacity of your available storage space, new photos and videos will stop being uploaded to iCloud Photos, files will stop being uploaded to iCloud Drive, and your iOS device will stop being backed up.
