The basic idea behind activating Family Sharing is to give other household members access to Apple services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade or iCloud storage. iTunes or App Store purchases can also be shared. The principle is that one pays and everyone else uses the product. But the function also allows you to set up the Apple Watch for another family member.
Thanks to Family Settings, even family members who don't own an iPhone can use Apple Watch. So they can make phone calls, send messages or share their location with you - ideal for children. After you set up a family member's watch, you can use your iPhone to manage some of their features. But some of them require pairing with your own iPhone and aren't available on Apple Watches paired using Family Settings.
These are: Irregular heart rhythm notification (fast and slow heartbeat notifications are only available for users over 13), ECG, Menstrual cycle tracking, Sleep, Oxygen saturation, Podcasts, Controller, Household and Shortcuts. Of course, Apple Pay is not available either.
What you need
- Apple Watch Series 4 and later with watchOS 7 or later.
- iPhone 6s or later with iOS 14 or later for initial watch setup.
- Own an Apple ID for yourself and another for a family member who will be using the Apple Watch. Your Apple ID must have two-factor authentication turned on.
- Have Family Sharing set up, which will include the person who is to use the Apple Watch. You must have the Organizer or Parent/Guardian role to set up an Apple Watch for a family member.
What you don't need
- A mobile data plan is not required to set up an Apple Watch for another family member, but some features require it. Therefore, if you are thinking of getting an Apple Watch for a child who would not need to use a mobile phone/iPhone with it, it is recommended to buy an Apple Watch with LTE, which is already supported by T-Mobile in our country.
Set up your child's Apple Watch or another household member
Turn on your Apple Watch
If the Apple Watch is not new, of course wipe it first. Then put the watch on or ask a family member to put it on. Hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
Bring your watch closer to your iPhone
Hold your Apple Watch near your iPhone and wait for it to display the message "Set up Apple Watch with iPhone." When it does, tap Continue. If you don't see the message, open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap All Watches, then tap Pair Another Apple Watch. Tap Set Up for Family Member and tap Continue on the next screen.
Pairing
Hold the iPhone over the animation that appears on the watch. Just place the watch display in the middle of the viewfinder on the iPhone screen. Wait until you see a message that the Apple Watch is paired. If you can't use the camera, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually and follow the on-screen instructions. Then tap Set Up Apple Watch.
Code for Apple Watch
On the Terms and Conditions screen, tap I agree (there's nothing else to do), then choose how big you want the text to be on Apple Watch. Then set the code to secure the watch.
Designation of a family member
From the list, select a family member to use the Apple Watch. If you don't already have one entered, tap Add a new family member. Enter the password for this family member's Apple ID and tap Next.
Approval of purchases
If you want to approve all purchases you make on your iPhone or download apps from it to your Apple Watch, turn on Approve Purchases.
Mobile connection and Wi-Fi
If the mobile operator of your iPhone plan supports Family Settings, you can add the watch to your plan. You can also set mobile data on the watch later. Then decide if you want to share the current Wi-Fi network to your Apple Watch.
other functions
On the following screens, choose whether you want to set up and turn on other Apple Watch features that the wearer might use. These include location services used by Find, Siri, iCloud messages, health data, Emergency SOS, emergency contacts, Health ID, Activity, track tracking in Exercise and Photos.
Shared Contacts and Time at School
Finally, you will be asked which contacts should be available on the Apple Watch. To enable them, you must have iCloud Contacts enabled. On your iPhone, go to Settings -> your name -> iCloud and make sure Contacts is turned on.
You can then select trusted people from your Contacts app to show up on your Apple Watch. You can change these shared contacts later. You can also set various restrictions in the Screen Time app on your iPhone. Finally, set the Screen Time code for your watch and turn on School Time. When you're done, tap OK. Apple Watch is ready to use.
T-mobile does not support setting a watch for a family member!!!
exactly... https://www.apple.com/watch/cellular/#table-family-setup
Basically copy-paste instructions from the Apple site without using your brain. Otherwise, the author would have to realize that the passage with mobile data is unnecessary for us. Family setup is not supported by any of the Czech operators
Has anything changed regarding carriers allowing family data to be transferred to the Apple Watch?
nothing has changed, none of our operators support this and no one at customer support has any idea what he was talking about and doesn't know where to escalate the problem. It's just our classic Czech shame
