The basic idea behind activating Family Sharing is to give other household members access to Apple services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade or iCloud storage. iTunes or App Store purchases can also be shared. The principle is that one pays and everyone else uses the product. An adult member of the household, i.e. the organizer of the family, invites others to the family group. Once they accept your invitation, they get instant access to subscriptions and content that can be shared within the family. But each member still uses his account. Privacy is also taken into account here, so no one will be able to track you unless you set it differently.

How Purchase Approval works

With the Purchase Approval feature, you can give your kids the freedom to make their own decisions while staying in control of their spending. The way it works is that when kids want to buy or download a new item, they send a request to the family organizer. He can approve or reject the request using his own device. If the family organizer approves the request and completes the purchase, the item is automatically downloaded to the child's device. If he declines the request, the purchase or download will not take place. However, if the child re-downloads a previously made purchase, downloads a shared purchase, installs an update, or uses a content code, the family organizer will not receive the request.

A family organizer can turn on Purchase Approval for any family member who is not of legal age. By default, it is turned on for all children under the age of 13. But when you invite someone under 18 to your family group, you'll be asked to set up Purchase Approval. Then, if a family member turns 18 and the family organizer turns off Purchase Approval, they won't be able to turn it back on.

Turn Purchase Approval on or off

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  • Open it Settings.
  • Click on yours name.
  • Select an offer Family sharing.
  • Click on Approval of purchases.
  • Choose a name a family member.
  • Using the switch present turn on or off Approval of purchases.

On a Mac:

  • Choose an offer Apple .
  • choose System Preferences.
  • Click on Family sharing (on macOS Mojave and earlier, select iCloud).
  • Select an option from the sidebar Rodina.
  • choose Details next to the child's name on the right.
  • Choose Approval of purchases.

Purchased items are added to the child's account. If you've turned on purchase sharing, the item is also shared with other members of the family group. If you decline the request, your child will receive a notification that you declined the request. If you close the request or do not make a purchase, the child must submit the request again. Requests that you decline or close are deleted after 24 hours. All unapproved requests will also be displayed in the Notification Center for the specified period of time.

If you want to give another parent or guardian in the group the right to approve purchases for you, you can. But he must be over 18 years old. In iOS, you do so in Settings -> your name -> Family Sharing -> family member's name -> Roles. Select a menu here Parent/Guardian. On a Mac, choose the menu Apple  -> System Preferences -> Family Sharing -> Family -> Details. Here, select the family member's name and select Parent/Guardian.
