One service and up to 6 household members - if you don't already have your family connected to one user package, you're unnecessarily paying for something you don't need. However, how to set up family sharing is not an event for hours of work. Just create a new family group and invite members to it, or you can join someone else's family group. The basic idea behind activating Family Sharing is to give other household members access to Apple services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade or iCloud storage. iTunes or App Store purchases can also be shared. The principle is that one pays and everyone else uses the product.

Family group

Any adult can set up Family Sharing for "their" family group from their Apple device, i.e. iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even iPod touch.

  • Click on Family sharing
  • Select an offer Set up a family
  • On-screen instructions they will literally guide you step by step, so just follow them

  • Choose an offer Apple 
  • choose System Preferences
  • Click on Family shared (if you have macOS Mojave, select the iCloud menu)

How to invite a family member to Family Sharing

If you have a child under 13 in your family, you can create their Apple ID here. If a family member already has an Apple ID, you can add it using the steps below. Each member can only be part of one family and you can only transfer to another family group once a year. On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, just visit again Settings -> Your name -> Family sharing and tap on Add member. Here you enter their name or email address and then just follow the clear instructions. You can then send the invitation via Messages or do so in person.

On Mac, visit again via the menu Apple  do System preference -> Family sharing and click here Add a family member and follow the instructions. If you are still using macOS Mojave and older, select iCloud -> Manage Family in System Preferences and click the "+" button, then just continue following the instructions. If you use multiple Apple IDs, you can invite them all to a group so you can share exactly the purchases you need with your family.

How to join a family group

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings -> Your name -> Invitations. Accept this and follow the instructions. When you join a family, you may be asked to confirm your account information and sign in to features or services set up for your family. On a Mac, follow these steps Apple do System preference, where click on Family sharing i.e. iCloud in macOS Mojave and earlier. Just select here Managing a family and follow the on-screen instructions to accept the invitation. If the invitation can't be accepted, check to see if someone has already joined the family using your Apple ID, or if someone is sharing purchased content from your Apple ID.
