From June 2017, roaming, i.e. fees for using mobile devices abroad, should be abolished within the member states of the European Union. After long negotiations, Latvia, which now holds the presidency of the European Union, announced the agreement.

Representatives of EU member states and the European Parliament have agreed that roaming across the entire European Union will be completely abolished from June 15, 2017. Until then, further reductions in roaming rates, which have been limited for several years, are planned.

From April 2016, customers abroad will have to pay a maximum of five cents (1,2 crowns) for one megabyte of data or a minute of calling and a maximum of two cents (50 pennies) for an SMS. VAT must be added to the mentioned prices.

The agreement on the abolition of roaming within the European Union from June 15, 2017 must be approved by the member states within six months, but it is expected that this should not pose any problem. It is not yet clear how the operators, who will lose a significant part of their profits, will react to the abolition of fees for the use of mobile devices abroad. Some predict that other services could become more expensive.
