The iPhone 13 Pro Max review is without a doubt one of the most anticipated reviews of this year on Jablíčkář, and honestly, I can't be surprised at all. Apple doesn't have to bring revolutionary news to its iPhones every year. It is enough for him to properly promote the few they contain. They will be sold just like rolls in a samoška. Whether it's good or not, you have to judge for yourself. But one thing is a fact – despite relatively few innovations, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the top among smartphones. If you ordered it right on the day of the pre-sale, which is September 17th, you could hope that it will arrive when the sale starts, which is September 24th. Of course, you could also go to brick-and-mortar stores. However, if you want to order the Pro models now, specifically from the Apple Online Store, you will have to wait a month. But the wait will be worth it.

Design and processing

Apple didn't experiment this year. Thirteens are based on last year's design, which is, after all, still fresh and relatively unsophisticated. Although, of course, it is indirectly based on the iPhones 4 and 5. After all, they were considered the most successful in terms of design. The steel is resistant to damage, which both glasses should be as well. Here too, Apple used its Ceramic Shield, i.e. the most durable glass you can find on a smartphone. Of course, we did not carry out the tests, but in the boundless waters of the Internet you can find quite a lot of crash tests that more or less prove that iPhones are still very durable phones.

Check out the iPhone 13 Pro Max unboxing:

You will love the new mountain blue color. It is not as dark as last year's Pacific blue. But it has one ailment – the phone's steel frame is a paradise for fingerprint scanners. This way you can see the print of each of your fingers on it. Not so on the back. The glass back has a fairly rough surface, so it doesn't slide like it did on the iPhone XS. The blue shining through the glass gives beautiful shades depending on how the light falls on it. In my opinion, this is easily the prettiest color on the Pro models since the creation of their product line.

Due to the sharp edges, the phone holds very well. If you don't use it in a cover, it will naturally wobble on a flat table surface, due to the protruding lenses. I was really afraid of it after the new show, but in the finale it's not so bad. In addition, this way you will be able to pick up your phone easily, e.g. on a table, thanks to the space for your fingers that the lenses create for you. Unfortunately, the iPhone 13 Pro Max placed on a flat surface in this way simply does not look very good. An uninitiated person might think you placed it on top of some hidden object underneath.

ProMotion display

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max will offer a 6,7" Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion technology with a resolution of 2778 × 1284 at 458 pixels per inch. It just looks great on him. During the day in direct sunlight, at night in dark mode, anytime. This is also thanks to the increase in brightness, which is now 200 nits higher, i.e. 1 nits (typical) and 000 nits in HDR. ProMotion ensures smooth movement of the display image, no matter what you do with it, whether you are playing demanding games or just looking at static text on the web. It adaptively determines the refresh rate, so your display "blinks" either only 1 times per second, or 200 times. It all depends on what you do with the phone.

An independent test also proves that Apple's display has really succeeded DisplayMate, who called it the best in a smartphone. He can also save the battery. By lowering its frequency, such energy demands are logically avoided. This is, for example, different from 120Hz Androids, which usually run at full speed and do not adjust the frequency in any way. He gets used to it extremely well. After the first few minutes, you take it for granted, which is perhaps a shame, because you can't appreciate the technology as time goes on. That is, until you buy an iPhone that's only a year older, which convinces you that there's no way back.

Cutout and TrueDepth camera

And then here we have a cutaway. That cut-out, which has changed for the first time in 4 years since the launch of the iPhone X. You will appreciate its reduction by the declared 20% most precisely on the 13 Pro Max model, because it will also display the most content. In the entire range of iPhone 13, the cutout is the same size, because it contains the same technology. On the other hand, owners of the mini model are of course beaten the most. The cut-out reduction resulted in a complete redesign of the contained technology. So the speaker moved from it to the border of the upper frame of the phone, the TrueDepth camera, which is still 12MPx with the same ƒ/2,2 aperture, was then moved from the right side to the left. Next to it are three other visible sensors. Apple has the most sophisticated facial authentication, which simply calls for some technology. Therefore, it is probably not possible to reduce it yet. If the sensors were under the display, they would not illuminate it. Shooting for the camera wouldn't solve anything, because there would have to be four next to each other and you simply don't want that.

Crop size comparison:

display

Unfortunately, the redesign of the entire system did not result in the possibility to verify a person even in landscape phone mode. You still have to do so only in the vertical position of the phone. Likewise, don't go face-checking with a mask covering your airways, and you'll still run into problems if you're wearing polarized glasses. However, in practice, reducing the cut-out does not bring much at all. If it had remained its original size, nothing really would have happened. The space around the cutout is still somewhat unused. Sure, you might appreciate it while playing games, browsing photos, watching videos. But it would also require debugging the system. Personally, I'm hoping for a future iOS update that could bring percentage indicators next to battery capacity. It's a small thing, but one that will make working with the phone more pleasant.

But there is one more thing connected with the cutout. Even if the display is brilliant, even if its resolution and ProMotion technology are nothing to complain about, the bezels could still be smaller. The competition can do it, we will surely see it from Apple one day, but it's a shame that it's not here today. With the same body proportions, we could have a slightly larger area. Perhaps we could also wait for the display of two applications next to each other, as iPads can do. The display is already big enough for it, and with the new drag and drop gesture support it would make real sense.

Performance, battery and storage

What can you expect from the A15 Bionic chip other than the fact that it can currently only stand comparison with the M1 chips that are included not only in the new Macs but also in the iPad Pro. However, their deployment in the iPhone would not make sense after all, especially considering their energy consumption. It is therefore low, but not with respect to a mobile phone. Absolutely everything on the news will run smoothly and without a single stutter. But it also works on last year's, last year's, and even three-year-old iPhones. The difference is visible, but only minimally. You will appreciate the performance especially with newly released games, but also with the passage of time, as the device ages, but it will still handle all demands.

The RAM memory is 6GB, regardless of which model you go for. The basic storage has been preserved, so it is the same as last year, when Apple increased it to 128 GB. But if you want, a 1TB variant is now also available. This will probably be used especially by passionate filmmakers who want to record their works in 4K and ProRes format. It will be really demanding on data, which is why the company will limit it to FullHD quality on the basic storage, so that you don't fill up all the available space in five minutes. However, I personally reached for the lowest capacity. Photos took up most of my space. However, after moving them to iCloud, I am currently more than happy with 80 GB of free space. That's a lot of space for all the apps and games you need to carry around.

Apple does not disclose the battery capacity of its devices. It will only tell you how long it will last. So according to his paper, it's up to 95 hours of music playback, 28 hours of video playback, up to 25 hours of streaming video playback. The company says that compared to the previous generation of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the novelty lasts two and a half hours longer. Why not trust it when it has a bigger battery and unique display technology? This is also why the phone is a bit thicker and heavier, albeit negligibly. However, the battery is specifically 4352mAh (16,75 Wh).

According to the published test it is also the smartphone with the longest battery life ever. And that's great to know when you consider buying a device that you know has not only the best display but also the longest life of any comparable smartphone. You can argue that such endurance is logical considering the dimensions of the phone, but keep in mind the larger display, which also takes more juice. However, own experience proves the test right. The staying power is really great. So she was already great with the Plus models. E.g. there wasn't much to complain about with such an iPhone XS Max. But the 13 Pro Max will last two days for an undemanding user. A more demanding day, i.e. not 18 hours as in the case of the Apple Watch, but really 24 hours. There is nothing to talk about here. Looking for a smartphone with the longest battery life? You just found it.

Cameras

The trio of main cameras has been further improved and further enlarged. At first glance, it might not seem like it, but the cameras of the 12s are simply massive, especially in the Pro models. But does it match their quality? When you take a 26MP wide-angle camera with a 1,5mm focal length, ƒ/108 aperture and sensor-shift OIS, you practically can't take a bad photo. What about the fact that it still has the same number of MPx. The competition offers even more than XNUMX MPx, but is it really good? The photo in the final is not that huge anyway, because there is a merging of pixels, usually four into one. When it comes to quality, logically the points for the largest possible pixel size on the largest possible sensor play here. The wide-angle camera excels in every scene. It doesn't matter what time of day you take photos or what. It's maybe just a little lacking in color for my taste, so I usually add a bit of color to the most interesting shots. But it's just a personal preference, and since photo evaluation is very subjective, you don't have to have a problem with this at all.

Sample macro images:

The 12 MPx ultra-wide-angle camera with a focal length of 13 mm and an aperture of ƒ/1,8 is even more fun than in the case of last year's generation, which had an aperture of ƒ/2,4 (and this year's XNUMXs without the Pro moniker also have it). It therefore holds more light and is more usable in more situations. It's even fun enough that I actually prefer it to the aforementioned widescreen. He likes "infinity" shots, he also likes macro shots, which we described in detail in a separate article. The process of acquiring them is probably not the best, and Apple will probably still tweak it, but it is another step towards making the iPhone a universal device. Personally, I need to take product photos of watches that are, in principle, small. Previous generations were capable of this, but of course not in such detail. So now the iPhone 13 Pro Max will completely replace another photographic technique for me. So I can think of one more device that the iPhone can't reach at the moment and probably won't in the future either - action cameras. While there are outdoor clothing phone holders, you probably won't be mountain biking or skiing down hills with your iPhone on your helmet.

What, on the other hand, is not much fun compared to the wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle camera, is the 12 MPx telephoto lens with a focal length of 77 mm and an aperture of ƒ/2,8. It is precisely that aperture that results in contradictory results. The 13 Pro models have a new triple zoom, the previous generation was able to do it 2,5x. But the aperture was ƒ/2,2, so the results did not suffer from such noise and artifacts. The telephoto lens of the 13 Pro is yes, but only in ideal lighting conditions, otherwise you may be disappointed with the result. After all, this also applies if you shoot in Portrait mode. Better to switch to 1x, even if the telephoto lens is already capable of portraits in night mode. We paid more attention to it in a separate article. After all, this also applies to contradictory ones photographic styles.

The difference between individual cameras. Ultra-wide on the left, wide-angle on the right and telephoto on the right:

They are fine, but unfortunately they cannot be applied post-production. But over the years of using the iPhone, I've learned to crop photos and then adjust them, not the other way around. You can use classic filters in real preview, you can also add them to the photo later. You have to choose a photographic style in advance, and then it can no longer be defined. Even though they are quite subtle, they really affect the result. They will wrap them in a warm or, on the contrary, cold garment, they will add contrast or liveliness. They may appeal to someone, but it's definitely not the feature that will make iPhones 13 buy exclusively. It's just a little extra bonus.

Example of Portrait mode:

With the presence of larger lenses, it is also necessary to take into account more reflected reflections. But you can work with it for the benefit of the result. Reflections give the right "feeling" to photos with low light. And if you don't want them on the result, you can remove them using the title Touch retouch. The whole trio is then completed by a True Tone flash with slow synchronization, which has great brightness, but the night mode definitely works better in this regard. We must not forget the LiDAR scanner. However, no news has happened with him, and his potential is still somehow not used. So is the 13 Pro (Max) the best camera phone? It isn't. In the rating ranking of smartphone photographic qualities DXOMark took fourth place. So it belongs to the top five of all photomobiles in the world, and that's not bad, right?

Examples of lens flares:

Video feature

No chance yet. It's not Hollywood yet. It's not even on Netflix. But YouTube will tolerate it, as will other video playing platforms. Just don't count on the fact that the Movie mode in the Camera app is simply called Movie, who knows how perfect. It is clear, intuitive, nice to work with, but the results simply have errors and will continue to have them for some time. We have to accept it because we have nothing else left anyway. If you shoot quiet scenes, everything will be fine. But as soon as the action comes, the mode stops chasing - and we're not talking about automatic refocusing, which you can fine-tune, but applying a blur effect. He has problems especially with hair and animal hair, as well as with small spaces, e.g. between the fingers.

Sample photos:

In this case, you see a sharp background instead of a blurred one. A lot also depends on the light. But the function is great and it's completely fine to consume the result on a mobile phone. In addition, there is great potential to fine-tune it to perfection. However, it should be mentioned that the Movie mode only handles 1080p resolution at 30 fps. And then, Hollywood, shudder - even with regard to ProRes. But there is not much to say about it yet. Simply because it isn't yet. When he is, we will of course take a look at his filly. Until then, it's just empty talk about what he can do and what he can't.

Example of changing the depth of field in film mode:

With video, it's the same as the iPhone 8 Plus was already capable of, that is 1080p or 4K video at 24, 25, 30 and 60 fps. There is no HDR video recording in Dolby Vision with a resolution of up to 4K at 60 fps, with which last year's model came. However, thanks to the 3x zoom on the telephoto lens, you can get closer to the scene. Digital zoom is nine times. Unfortunately, the slow-motion video still remains only in resolution 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps. So it doesn't even happen 4K, nor an even higher slowdown, even if only for a few tenths of a second, which the competition can do, for example, in the form of Samsung.

Filming mode editing interface:

Connectivity and other features

Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about whether the iPhone should have a USB-C connector. Even the thirteen-year-olds are still going Lightning. Of course, only he himself knows if Apple will even decide to integrate USB-C for this, or if it will stay purely with wireless charging. I personally have no reason Lightning what to blame, but others could complain about the overall connectivity of the device. It is linked to this original connector Apple and USB-C would certainly bring more possibilities. But the company would no longer pay certification fees MFI, and the question is whether its removal would be balanced by technology MagSafe. Of course, she is not missing this year either. In the package, however, the appropriate cable with MagSafe you won't find It is included here, except for the iPhone and a few brochures, only the USB-C cable lightning. You have to use your own adapter or buy a suitable one. The situation from last year is repeating itself. Of course, headphones are also missing.

But while we've had a bite of the sound, the iPhone 13 Pro Max supports surround sound playback, as well as Dolby Atmos. At medium volume, the output is ideal, without too much distortion. As soon as you increase the volume, you have to count on the fact that you will hear yourself more, but worse. On the other hand, you won't have a problem consuming content in the form of series in this way, even playing music here and there. But of course it is not comparable to Bluetooth speakers.

iPone 13 Pro max review

Even the new products have 5G, but it is only available in a few places in the Czech Republic. So, for now, this is probably not the kind of technology that would make you buy any phone with this support. That is, if you are not lucky enough and do not live directly in the coverage area and at the same time do not have the possibility of a Wi-Fi connection. On the other hand, thanks to its capabilities, the iPhone 13 Pro Max can last you for several years, when the situation with 5G may be different. That way you will be ready.

Definitely the best iPhone

Overall, there is not much to complain about. Of course, some people may be bothered by the size, but in that case you can go for a smaller model, for others, the price. Even in this case, cheaper variants are available, such as last year's twelve. But if you want the top, the iPhone 13 Pro Max represents it. Rightfully so. Even if compared to the twelve with a minimum of innovations, there are still news here and they are important. Whether it is worth investing in it, of course, depends on your preferences. I personally won't let it go. It is, after all, the best iPhone you can currently own.
